Wzdłuż dawnej drogi do Würzburga ta skromna budowla z dachem dwuspadowym i małą wieżyczką dachową przylega do zbocza, które niegdyś porastały winorośle. Kaplicę wzniesiono w latach 1739–1742, a poświęcił ją książę-opata z Fuldy, Amandus von Buseck.

The Steinthal Chapel, also known as the Maria im Steinthal Pilgrimage Chapel, is located above the old wine-growing town of Hammelburg in a narrow side valley of the Franconian Saale River. Nestled along the former road to Würzburg, this simple hall-style building with a gabled roof and a small ridge turret clings to a hillside that was once covered with grapevines. The chapel was built between 1739 and 1742 and consecrated by Amandus von Buseck, Prince-Abbot of Fulda. Its origins date back to a wayside shrine from 1716, which Johann Keck, a miller from Hammelburg, had erected out of gratitude for being saved from mortal danger. To this day, the center of the pilgrimage is the Steinthal image of grace—the colored sandstone figure of the so-called “Schweinfurt Madonna”—which stands in the chapel’s vestibule. For a long time, the Franciscans from the nearby Altstadt monastery oversaw the pilgrimage, which experienced a resurgence especially after the world wars. Today, Maria Steinthal is a place of silence, prayer, and hope, visited primarily by individual pilgrims, families, and small processions.
