Der Ahlenbachstausee wurde von 1985 bis 1990 durch die LPG Pflanzenproduktion Niederorschel gebaut – ursprünglich zur Bewässerung landwirtschaftlicher Flächen. Durch die Wende kam der See jedoch nie in dieser Funktion zum Einsatz. Der Bau erfolgte ohne Rücksicht auf Eigentumsgrenzen und ohne Zustimmung vieler Grundstückseigentümer. Erst mit der Flurbereinigung ab 1998 wurden Eigentumsfragen und Wege neu geregelt. Die Fläche befindet sich seit dem im Eigentum der Gemeinde Niederorschel. Der See hat ein Fassungsvermögen von ca. 280.000 m³, eine Wasserfläche von 9,5 Hektar und ist bis zu 8 m tief. Die Staumauer ist 8,4 m hoch und 154 m lang. Heute ist der Ahlenbachstausee ein beliebtes Naherholungsgebiet und an einen Angelverein verpachtet.

Le lac artificiel d'Ahlenbach a été construit entre 1985 et 1990 par la coopérative agricole LPG Pflanzenproduktion Niederorschel, à l'origine pour irriguer les terres agricoles. Cependant, en raison de la réunification, le lac n'a jamais été utilisé à cette fin. La construction a été réalisée sans tenir compte des limites de propriété et sans l'accord de nombreux propriétaires fonciers. Ce n'est qu'avec le remembrement à partir de 1998 que les questions de propriété et les chemins ont été redéfinis. Depuis lors, la zone appartient à la commune de Niederorschel. Le lac a une capacité d'environ 280 000 m³, une superficie de 9,5 hectares et une profondeur maximale de 8 mètres. Le barrage mesure 8,4 mètres de haut et 154 mètres de long. Aujourd'hui, le lac de barrage d'Ahlenbach est un lieu de détente très apprécié et est loué à un club de pêche.

The Ahlenbach reservoir was built between 1985 and 1990 by the Niederorschel agricultural production cooperative (LPG Pflanzenproduktion Niederorschel) – originally for the purpose of irrigating agricultural land. However, due to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the lake was never used for this purpose. The construction took place without regard for property boundaries and without the consent of many landowners. It was not until the land consolidation process began in 1998 that ownership issues and access routes were redefined. Since then, the area has been owned by the municipality of Niederorschel. The lake has a capacity of approx. 280,000 m³, a water surface area of 9.5 hectares, and is up to 8 m deep. The dam is 8.4 m high and 154 m long. Today, the Ahlenbach reservoir is a popular local recreation area and is leased to a fishing club.
