The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Georg in Wittershausen, a district of Oberthulba in the Bad Kissingen district, has shaped the townscape for centuries. Its roots go back to the 14th century, when the first church was built from red sandstone. The striking church tower, the work of Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn from 1612, has been preserved to this day and is registered as an architectural monument. The old church was demolished in 1957/58. Under the direction of master cathedral builder Hans Schädel, a modern new building was constructed in the unusual shape of a pentagon, which was consecrated by Bishop Josef Stangl on September 20, 1958. In addition to the historic tower, valuable furnishings from the previous church were also retained, including the altar of the Virgin Mary with the 14 holy helpers and the statues of St. George and St. Wendelin. St. George's thus uniquely combines medieval tradition with the architectural language of the 20th century and remains a lively focal point of church life in Wittershausen.
