Der Wallfahrtsort auf dem 448 m hohen Hülfensberg existiert seit dem 14. Jahrhundert. Die Wallfahrtskirche wurde 1360-1367 erbaut. In ihr wird ein aus dem 12. Jahrhundert stammendes romanisches Kreuz von den Gläubigen verehrt. Während der deutsch-deutschen Teilung war der in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Grenzzaun befindliche Wallfahrtsort nur für wenige, ansässige Eichsfelder erreichbar.
