The ruins of the summit castle are located on the summit of the 524 m high Stoppelsberg in the Kuppenrhön, the remains of a volcanic vent that was formed in the Miocene. The keep of Hauneck Castle is founded on hexagonal basalt columns that were formed when the lava cooled; they emerge at the base of the keep. The castle was built from basalt stone and has an almost square basic shape. Some of the gate and window lintels, corner blocks and humpback blocks are made of white sandstone. They come from the Lange Steine natural monument. All the buildings can be attributed to the new construction from the 15th century. Only the keep dates back to the first known castle complex from the 14th century. The approximately 1.5 meter thick curtain wall covers the entire summit of the Stoppelsberg. The walls of the buildings are still up to 15 meters high.
