The first mention of the church goes back to the 12th century and was first mentioned in 1260 The town church, dedicated to St. Mauritius (Moritz), received its shape from Heinrich von Münch, the former lord of the castle of Münchenbernsdorf. The church, built in Romanesque style and enlarged in late Gothic style, stands unified, stately and beautiful despite some differences. When entering the church, the viewer immediately notices the beautifully carved Mary's coronation altar. The altar of the church was made in 1505 in the workshop of Valentin Lendenstreich and has a high artistic value. It is located in the choir room, which was renovated in late Gothic style in 1907. The altar of the Virgin Mary was probably bought by the church patron Simon von Ungnaden in 1556 and bequeathed to the church. Under the altar there is a picture of "Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia". In the middle of the church there is a baptismal font, which is 800 years old and made of sandstone.

Die Stadtkirche, dem St. Mauritius (Moritz) geweiht, erhielt ihre Gestalt durch Heinrich von Münch, dem ehemaligen Schlossherr von Münchenbernsdorf. Die romanisch gebaute und spätgotisch vergrößerte Kirche steht trotz einiger Verschiedenheiten einheitlich, stattlich und schön da. Beim Betreten der Kirche fällt dem Betrachter sofort der wunderschön geschnitzte Marienkrönungsaltar auf. Der Altar der Kirche ist im Jahre 1505 in der Werkstatt von Valentin Lendenstreich gefertigt worden und besitzt einen hohen künstlerischen Wert. Er befindet sich im Chorraum, der 1907 spätgotisch erneuert wurde. Der Marienaltar wurde wahrscheinlich im Jahre 1556 von dem Kirchpatron Simon von Ungnaden gekauft und der Kirche vererbt. Unter dem Altar befindet sich ein Bild der "Heiligen Elisabeth von Thüringen". Inmitten der Kirche steht ein Taufstein, der 800 Jahre alt ist und aus Sandstein gefertigt wurde.
