The so-called "Owl Tower" is an old GDR border tower near Geismar, in which native birds nested after reunification. The tower on the "Green Belt Thuringia" National Nature Monument was in need of major renovation, was to be preserved as a bird sanctuary and was completely renovated on the outside as part of a project grant. In the immediate vicinity of the tower there is also an "owl place" refuge with a wooden owl from the Empfertshausen carving school. The hut also houses a bird box built by pupils from Geismar elementary school. "Until a few years ago, owls with a clutch of up to 14 eggs actually used to breed here," said Geismar's former mayor and bird expert Norbert Mihm. A Egyptian goose also nested in the tower. Today, the border tower is mainly used as a refuge by jackdaws and bats. The two information boards next to the refuge provide information about local birds and border surveillance systems, including a QR code for eyewitness accounts from border refugees and their experiences.
