Johannes Brahms ranks among the most important composers of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg and later based in Vienna, he spent his life searching for places of peace and inspiration, far away from the public music scene. During the summer months of the late 1880s, Brahms stayed several times in Thun, Switzerland, where he completed important works – stays that exemplify his need for retreat and scenic inspiration. Thuringia was also such a place for Brahms, offering both relaxation and intellectual exchange. Among other places, he visited Weimar and Bad Liebenstein, where he enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and scenic surroundings as a spa guest. The composer's close connection to Thuringia is evident not least in Meiningen: in 1899, the Brahms monument by Adolf von Hildebrand, the first monument to Johannes Brahms erected in Germany, was dedicated to him in the city's English Garden. To this day, it commemorates the special appreciation Brahms received in Thuringia and underscores the cultural significance of the state within European music history.

In den Sommermonaten der späten 1880er Jahre hielt sich Brahms mehrfach im schweizerischen Thun auf, wo er wichtige Werke vollendete – Aufenthalte, die exemplarisch für sein Bedürfnis nach Rückzug und landschaftlicher Anregung stehen. Auch Thüringen war für Brahms ein solcher Ort zwischen Erholung und geistigem Austausch. Er besuchte unter anderem Weimar und Bad Liebenstein, wo er als Kurgast die ruhige Atmosphäre und die landschaftliche Umgebung schätzte. Die enge Verbindung des Komponisten zu Thüringen zeigt sich nicht zuletzt in Meiningen: Im Englischen Garten der Stadt wurde ihm 1899 mit dem Brahms-Denkmal von Adolf von Hildebrand das erste in Deutschland errichtete Denkmal für Johannes Brahms gewidmet. Es erinnert bis heute an die besondere Wertschätzung, die Brahms in Thüringen erfuhr, und unterstreicht die kulturelle Bedeutung des Landes innerhalb der europäischen Musikgeschichte.
