The heart of the fortified church is the Protestant town church of St. Michael. The 16th century brought the Reformation to Ostheim. The community experienced a cultural and economic boom. Ostheim was elevated to the status of a town in 1596. The number of inhabitants had doubled. The old church from 1410 was now too small. The current town church is one of the first Lutheran preaching churches to be built in central Germany after the Reformation. The magnificent Renaissance-style main entrance on the south side catches the eye. The church interior with its double galleries seats over 1,000 people. The ceiling painting depicts the heavenly throne of God according to Revelation 4 and 5. The galleries face the pulpit with the four evangelists. Christian symbols have been arranged in gray painting around the windows on the south wall: God's love, faithfulness and care as well as David and Goliath, Cain and Abel. An altar-like picture frame shows the story of Jesus Christ. Opposite the pulpit is the baroque-style pew from 1738, the same year the organ in the choir was built. The baptismal font from 1619 shows biblical images of baptism. The stone offering box from 1619 still invites donations today. Along the walls are impressive tombs from the old church.
