Over millions of years, the waters of a small brook have dug almost 10 meters deep into the mossy rocks below Wartburg Castle. If you hike through the narrow gorge today, you can never be sure that a fire-spewing monster is not lurking behind the next bend.
At the end of the gorge, the “Hohe Sonne” (High sun) provides a wonderful view of Wartburg Castle. From there, the picturesque circular trail leads through the “Landgrafen” Gorge back to the starting point of the hike.
Experienced hikers should definitely take the opportunity to extend the hike from the “Hohe Sonne” to the idyllically situated Wilhemsthal House. The former summer residence of the Dukes of Weimar is embedded in a large landscape park and is currently being extensively restored. |

In Millionen von Jahren hat sich das Wasser eines kleinen Baches fast 10 Meter tief in die moosigen Felsen unterhalb der Wartburg gegraben. Wer heute durch die enge Schlucht wandert, kann sich nicht sicher sein, ob hinter der nächsten Biegung nicht doch ein feuerspeiendes Ungeheuer lauert.
Am Ende der Schlucht bietet sich an der „Hohen Sonne“ eine wunderbare Aussicht zur Wartburg. Von dort aus führt der malerische Rundweg durch die Landgrafenschlucht zurück zum Ausganspunkt der Wanderung.
Wer gut zu Fuß ist, sollte unbedingt die Chance nutzen die Wanderung von der Hohen Sonne aus bis zum idyllisch gelegenen Schloss Wilhemsthal zu verlängern. Die einstige Sommerresidenz der Weimarer Herzöge liegt eingebettet in einen großen Landschaftspark und wird derzeit umfangreich restauriert.
