Die Gemeinde Altengottern, die im Jahr 811 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wurde, liegt am linken Ufer der Unstrut zwischen Bad Langensalza und Mühlhausen. Altengottern kann auf eine lange und wechselvolle Geschichte zurückblicken. 1997 war das Jahr der 1000-Jahr-Feier, die auf einer urkundlichen Erwähnung im Rahmen einer Schenkung durch Kaiser Otto III. beruhte. Das Bild des Dorfes, das sich über eine Länge von ca. 2 km erstreckt, wird bestimmt durch die beiden evangelischen Kirchen St. Trinitatis und St. Wigberti sowie das ehemalige Schloss der Freiherren Marschall von Altengottern, das heute ein heilpädagogisches Kinder- und Jugendheim beherbergt. Die Infrastruktur des Ortes wird bestimmt durch einen Einkaufsmarkt, eine Bank, eine Metzgerei, eine Bäckerei und drei Gaststätten. Der Ort bietet sich als Ausgangspunkt für Ausflüge in den nahe gelegenen UNESCO-Nationalpark Hainich, zum Mittelpunkt Deutschlands in die Gemeinde Vogtei und nach Mühlhausen oder Bad Langensalza an. Aber auch ein Abstecher in die nähere Umgebung lohnt sich. Wer Lust auf Landschaft und Natur hat, kann sich von hier aus auf den 2 km entfernten Roten Berg begeben. Der Rote Berg/Hopfenberg gehört zu einer Reihe von Keuperhügeln, die sich wie Inseln entlang der Unstrut zwischen Mühlhausen und Bad Langensalza erstrecken. Das FFH-Schutzgebiet mit einem von alten Baumriesen durchsetzten Waldbestand und Streuobstwiesen bietet erholsame Ruhe und fast unberührte Natur. Bei gutem Wetter reicht der Blick weit in das Thüringer Becken mit seiner flachen Landschaft rechts und links der Unstrut. Eine Wanderung zum Roten Berg sollte unbedingt die Linde als Ziel haben. Sie ist das weithin sichtbare Wahrzeichen und Wappen des Dorfes. Schon vor vielen hundert Jahren wurde sie besungen, Geschichten und Gedichte rankten sich um den Baum. In seinem Schatten tut es gut, sich auszuruhen, bevor man seinen Weg fortsetzt. Der 192 km lange Unstrut-Radweg führt an Altengottern vorbei.

Une randonnée vers le Rote Berg doit absolument avoir pour destination le tilleul. C'est le point de repère et le blason du village, visible de loin. Il y a plusieurs centaines d'années, on chantait à son sujet, on écrivait des histoires et des poèmes sur cet arbre. Il est bon de se reposer à son ombre avant de poursuivre sa route. La piste cyclable d'Unstrut, longue de 192 km, passe devant Altengottern.

The Rote Berg/Hopfenberg belongs to a series of Keuper hills that stretch like islands along the Unstrut between Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza. The FFH protected area with a forest stand interspersed with old giant trees and meadow orchards offers relaxing peace and almost untouched nature. In good weather, the view extends far into the Thuringian basin with its flat landscape to the right and left of the Unstrut. A hike to the Rote Berg should definitely have the lime tree as its destination. It is the landmark and coat of arms of the village, visible from afar. Many hundreds of years ago it was sung about, stories and poems were written about the tree. It is good to rest in its shade before continuing on your way. The 192 km long Unstrut cycle path leads past Altengottern.
