The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Wirmsthal has an eventful history. It is not known when the first church was built, but it is assumed that a small church existed early on. There is evidence that a new church was built in 1603 by the mayor Marx Seufert. The present neoclassical church was built in 1823, together with the Wirmsthal cemetery. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and, as a hall building with a recessed choir, shows typical forms of its time. Two statues of saints from England, Thomas More and John Fischer, which arrived here in the 19th century, are striking. The high altar from the Unterzell monastery in Würzburg, decorated with the coat of arms of Bishop Johann Philipp von Greifenklau, remained the only altar for a long time after the renovation in the 1970s. It was not until 2002 that the church received a new ambo and altar made of Jura marble, designed by Dr. Jürgen Lenssen and crafted by stonemason Thorsten Lauer. They were consecrated by Bishop Paul Werner Scheele on September 15, 2002. The ensemble also includes the churchyard wall, a crucifix from 1833 and a wayside shrine relief from the 17th century.
