Ce qui rend l'église municipale « Zur Gotteshilfe » de Waltershausen si particulière :
L'église municipale « Zur Gotteshilfe » de Waltershausen est considérée comme
le premier grand édifice baroque à plan central de Thuringe et est considérée, de par son plan et sa construction, comme le précurseur de la Frauenkirche de Dresde.
Principale caractéristique de l'église : la tribune centrale réservée aux seigneurs, située sur la première galerie. On y voit également les armoiries de Saxe-Gotha, qui, depuis la Réforme, symbolisent le nouveau régime ecclésiastique des souverains.
Un autre point fort de l'intérieur est
le plus grand orgue baroque de Thuringe.
L'église a d'ailleurs longtemps rempli une double fonction en tant que
église municipale et église de résidence – le Tenneberg, situé au-dessus de la ville, a longtemps servi de pavillon de chasse et fut plus tard la résidence des veuves des ducs de Gotha.

Die Waltershäuser Stadtkirche “Zur Gotteshilfe“ gilt als
Thüringens erster großer barocker Zentralkirchenbau und wird in ihrer Grundrissausbildung und Bauausführung als Vorläufer der Dresdner Frauenkirche betrachtet.
Hauptcharakteristikum der Kirche: der zentrale Herrschaftsstand auf der ersten Empore. Hier siehst du auch das aufgemalte sächsisch-gothaische Wappen, seit der Reformation Ausdruck des neuen landesherrlichen Kirchenregiments.
Ein weiteres Highlight im Inneren ist
die größte Barockorgel Thüringens.
Die Kirche erfüllte übrigens lange eine Doppelfunktion als
Stadt- und als Residenzkirche – der über der Stadt gelegene Tenneberg diente lange als Jagdschloss und war später Witwensitz der Gothaer Herzöge.
