Meistens ist der Fluss Itz, der dieses breite Tal geschaffen hat, kaum zu erkennen. Wenn aber im Thüringer Wald der Schnee schmilzt dann kann er für Wochen unübersehbar breit werden. Die Natur bedankt sich, dass die Wiesen des Itzgrundes in weiten Teilen als Hochwasserpolder belassen wurden, mit seltenen Insekten, Vögeln und Pflanzen.

Der Weg verläuft bergauf und parallel zum Hang. Von hier lohnt die Aussicht auf die Dörfer im Itzgrund, die Eierberge, das Maintal und den Staffelberg.</p> <p>Der Weg stößt bald auf eine aus dem Tal kommende geteerte Straße, die in Richtung Tal führt. Unten angekommen folgt man der Wegeabzweigung nach rechts und nach wenigen Metern links. Der Weg führt nach Untermerzbach, vorbei an der mächtigen Hunneneiche am Ortseingang und dem bekannten Untermerzbacher Schloss. Innerhalb des Ortes der Wegemarkierung folgen bis auf die Ortsumgehung von Untermerzbach. Man überquert die Kreisstraße in Richtung Truschenhof und Schenkenau und folgt dem schmalen Sträßchen.</p> <p>Den ritterschaftlichen Gutshof Truschenhof lässt man links liegen und folgt dem Wanderweg bis zur Schenkenau, ebenfalls ein ehemaliger Rittersitz. Kurz vor dem Gut biegt der Weg im rechten Winkel nach rechts ab und überquert bald die Itz. Weiter geht es nach Kaltenbrunn. Man folgt der innerörtlichen Wegweisung und unterquert bald die Bundesstraße B4. Der Wanderweg führt wieder in die freie Landschaft und durch eine abwechslungsreiche Wald- und Wiesenlandschaft.</p> <p>Nach leichtem Aufstieg führt der Weg in Richtung Lahm. Noch vor dem Ort zweigt der Weg in Westen nach Hemmendorf, dem Ausgangsort, ab und führt durch das Itztal. Er führt entlang der dortigen Kreisstraße auf dem Hochwassersteg direkt ins Dorf. An der Abzweigung der Kreisstraße liegt linkerhand der Wanderparkplatz.</p>
