Im nahe liegenden Krebes hatte der Illustrator Hermann Vogel (Illustrationen in Grimms Märchenbüchern) sein Haus, das noch heute zu besichtigen ist.<br />Über die Straße kommen Sie bereits nach wenigen Metern zu den Burgsteinruinen, ehemalige Wallfahrtskirchen der Bistümer Naumburg und Bamberg, deren Bistumsgrenzen über dem Burgstein verliefen. Von hier führt Sie der Kammweg am Waldrand zum Burgbach und durch den Wald in das wildromantische Kemnitzbachtal. An der Kienmühle finden Sie die erste Rastmöglichkeit. Die stillgelegte Mahl- und Schneidmühle gehört zu den letzten ihrer Art in der Region.   Auf dem Kammweg im Kemnitzbachtal müssen Sie gefasst sein auf herrlich verwachsene Pfade, wurzlige Waldwege und immer das sanfte Rauschen des Kemnitzbaches als Hintergrundgeräusch. Abwechslungsreich führt der zertifizierte Qualitätsweg vorbei an der Unterkemnitzmühle auf eine Anhöhe vor Gutenfürst mit schönem Ausblick. Nach dem idyllischen Forstteich mit angrenzender Freizeitanlage geht es zum ehemaligen deutsch-deutschen Grenzbahnhof in Gutenfürst. Das großräumige bebaute Gelände lässt noch heute seine Bedeutung für die DDR erahnen. Übrig geblieben ist ein Haltepunkt der Vogtlandbahn. Am Bahnhof vorbei führt Sie ein Wirtschaftsweg unter den Bahngleisen hinweg geradeaus, dann bergan in einen Hohlweg. Auf der Höhe angekommen bietet sich Ihnen ein traumhafter Rundumblick über das ehemalige Grenzgebiet. Das Bundesland Bayern ist nun zum Greifen nah. Auf den Spuren der deutsch-deutschen Grenzgeschichte leitet Sie bald der Kolonnenweg, ein Betonplattenweg. Der Kammweg verläuft etwas oberhalb des Dreifreistaatensteins, der die Grenze der Bundesländer Sachsen, Bayern und Thüringen markiert. Nun wandern Sie auf einem asphaltierten Wirtschaftsweg nach Gebersreuth. Auf der Höhe säumen ab und zu Bäume und Feldgehölze den Weg, den Weiler Straßenreuth lassen Sie links liegen. Nach Gebersreuth treffen Sie im Waldstück auf den Saale-Orla-Weg, der überwiegend identisch mit dem Kammwegverlauf bis nach Blankenstein führt. Den Wald verlassend bekommen Sie schon bald das kleine Örtchen Mödlareuth zu Gesicht. Geteilt durch den Tannbach, gehört die südliche Ortshälfte zu Bayern, die nördliche Seite zu Thüringen. Das Deutsch-Deutsche Museum dokumentiert eindrucksvoll die Geschichte „Klein-Berlins“, wie man Mödlareuth wegen seiner Grenzmauer auch nennt. Am Gasthaus „Zum Grenzgänger“ sind Sie am Ziel der Etappe angekommen. In Mödlareuth gehen Sie vom Gasthaus „Zum Grenzgänger“ am Außengeländes des Museums entlang, vorbei an den Ruinen der historischen Mühle und dem Museumsparkplatz, bis Sie nach einer kleinen Obstplantage auf den parallel zum Tannbach verlaufenden Kolonnenweg treffen. Wenig später verlassen Sie den Betonplattenweg und wechseln auf einen abwechslungsreichen Fahrweg, dann Pfad, dem Sie bis zum Aussichtspavillon Öhninger Hütte folgen. Nach dem herrlichen Ausblick steigen Sie wieder hinab zum Kolonnenweg, der Sie entlang des eindrucksvollen Saalebogens mit Blick auf das Hirschberger Schloss bis kurz vor Hirschberg führt. Der ehemalige Grenzstreifen ist weitgehend als Schutzgebiet „Grünes Band“ durch zahlreiche junge Birken, aber auch andere landschaftsprägende Laubgehölze gekennzeichnet. Ein angenehmer Pfad führt abwechslungsreich auf der Höhe auf dem das Saaletal begrenzenden Hang am recht en Ufer der Saale entlang bis zum Beginn des Hirschberger Hags. Es geht leicht bergan und bergab, durch eine tief eingeschnittene Senke eines Bächleins mit entzückenden Aus- und Durchsichten in das Saaletal. Leicht abwärts kommen Sie der Saale immer näher und damit auch zum Naturschutzgebiet Hag und der „Saalebänk“ mit Platz für 97 Personen, deren Sitzfläche und Lehne in einem Stück aus dem Stamm eines 130 Jahre alten Baumes gefertigt wurden. Die Bank stand einmal als „Saalebank“ als längste Bank aus einem Stamm im Guinessbuch der Rekorde. Weiter Richtung Hirschberg laufen Sie über den in der zerklüfteten Felswand fest verankerten Hängesteg. Ein Hirsch am Felshang blickt stolz über das Tal der Saale.</p>

The extensive developed area still reveals its importance for the GDR today. What remains is a stop of the Vogtlandbahn. Past the station, a farm track leads you straight under the railway tracks, then uphill into a hollow way. Once at the top, a dreamlike panoramic view of the former border area opens up to you. The federal state of Bavaria is now within arm's reach. On the tracks of German-German border history, the patrol road, a concrete slab path, soon guides you. The Kammweg runs slightly above the Three Free States Stone, which marks the border of the federal states of Saxony, Bavaria, and Thuringia. Now you hike on an asphalted farm track to Gebersreuth. Occasionally trees and field shrubs line the path at the height; you leave the hamlet Straßenreuth on the left. After Gebersreuth, you meet the Saale-Orla trail in the woodland section, which mostly coincides with the Kammweg route to Blankenstein. Leaving the forest, you will soon see the small village of Mödlareuth. Divided by the Tannbach, the southern half belongs to Bavaria, the northern side to Thuringia. The German-German Museum impressively documents the history of "Little Berlin," as Mödlareuth is also called because of its border wall. At the guesthouse "Zum Grenzgänger" you have reached the end of the stage. In Mödlareuth, you walk from guesthouse "Zum Grenzgänger" along the outdoor area of the museum, past the ruins of the historic mill and the museum parking lot, until after a small orchard you meet the patrol road running parallel to the Tannbach. Shortly thereafter, you leave the concrete slab path and switch to a varied farm track, then path, which you follow to the Öhninger hut viewpoint pavilion. After the magnificent view, you descend again to the patrol road, which leads you along the impressive Saale bow with a view of Hirschberg Castle up to shortly before Hirschberg.
