The well-signposted geological hiking trail Bad Kösen allows a stroll through the beauty of the landscape. The riverbanks and steep slopes on the right and left of the Saale are witnesses to the geological development and landscape shaping by the Saale. Like a proud guardian, the Rudelsburg stands on a steep slope. The Saaleck castle is located on a loop hill of the Saale. A visit to the castles offers not only historically interesting insights but also beautiful views into the picturesque Saale valley with its steep slopes made of the rocks of the Muschelkalk sea. Between the castles lies the Kunoklamm, a deep gorge in the Middle Wellenkalk, situated on an oolite bank (hardstone). At the riverbanks of the Saale, a profile up to 100 m has been opened. It offers a unique insight into the geological period from 240 to 230 million years ago. The limestone mining on the Saale can be traced back to the times of castle building in the 11th/12th centuries. Primarily limestone was mined in the small quarries. This was the basis for the construction of the castles. It remains a sought-after building material to this day. The still operating quarry in Bad Kösen extracts the lower and middle Muschelkalk. In 1868, the Johannis spring was discovered in Bad Kösen. It provided a weakly sodium chloride-containing brine until 1963, which had already been used for spa and healing purposes at that time. The saline and the Borlach shaft still bear witness to the extraction of brine from the Zechstein salt. Today the town hall and the pumping station, which once pumped the brine to the graduation towers, are protected monuments. Spa guests enjoy thermal treatments in the modern brine bath and relax during visits to the city park.

thuecat:directions @en Start of the hike A good starting point is at the saline technical facilities, beginning with the waterworks and the double-field pumping station at the Saalebrücke. This is where the power comes from to extract brine (salty groundwater, 5%) from 175 m depth from the Borlach shaft and pump it up to the graduation tower. Salt deposits (Zechstein, Röt) lie underground, which, when in contact with circulating groundwater, also bring the salt to the surface naturally. Passing the weir, the path follows the Loreley promenade and the Saale bike path between river and rock. Up to the Johannis spring, you walk along the lower slope of the Saale, directly along the Muschelkalk. At the beginning, an information board explains its formation and origin from a 250 million years old, shallow, and warm sea. Those who look closely can recognize the differences and fossil remains (shells). At the Johannis spring, a board is dedicated to the origin of the brine. Further through the Saale floodplain, the path leads up to the plateau above the Saale, on which the graduation tower, the Rudelsburg, and monuments were erected. This is a river terrace formed during an ice age about 200,000 years ago (Saale glaciation) before the Saale cut down to its current level. Rudelsburg and Saaleck Castle Upwards via widely spaced wooden steps, the path continues towards Rudelsburg. A comfortable, wide path, leading into natural Muschelkalk stairs, leads to the plateau in front of the "Lion Monument" where an information board offers details about the approximately 100 m thick marine deposits. Passing three other monuments, the path goes downward under the castle bridge on the spur of the Rudelsburg. The young valley landscape developed over the last 2.5 million years during the ice age and the resulting exposed location of the castles are explained by the board "The Saale breakthrough". Another board describes the foam limestone. This limestone variant, only a few meters thick, is a building stone with a centuries-old tradition. Many castles and cathedrals were constructed from it, as the Naumburg founder figures were carved from this limestone. Below rises the fortified bergfried of the Saaleck castle built in the 12th century. Here, one can descend via a mostly dry watercourse in the Muschelkalk, the so-called Kuno Gorge, to the boat landing on the Saale and return to Bad Kösen by the Saale steamboat. Those who continue towards Himmelreich pass a section of road before the path turns right upwards to Saaleck Castle. Stendorf and Himmelreich Serpentines lead from Saaleck Castle down to the village of the same name. The path crosses the Saale to Stendorf, a former knight's estate and outpost. Behind the village, two boards near a beech tree provide information about traditional stone mining and the Himmelreich locality, a steep slope above the Saale. A small but steep path leads upward through the Muschelkalk rocks to the viewpoint and the mountain restaurant "Himmelreich". An effort that is worthwhile when looking at the Saale valley below. The two castles tower opposite, the 12.5 m high obelisk of the "Emperor's Stone" shines white through the trees. On the plateau above lies the Kreipitzsch manor. There the Upper Muschelkalk is still present. To the south, the valley broadens at the confluence of the Saale and the Ilm north of Bad Sulza. Path to Lengefeld Shortly behind the parking lot at Himmelreich, the path climbs again into the steep slope. It leads through small, overgrown quarries where foam limestone was mined, as explained by the board "Old Quarry". The extreme location (dry grassland, south-facing slope, steep slope) leads to typical dry grassland vegetation along the path. Following the path, the hiker reaches a beautiful deciduous forest and turns left at a fork in the path after a few steps. Leaving the forest behind, the hiker reaches Lengefeld via a meadow path. Return to the starting point From here, the path runs along the edge of the road. The large quarry still in operation is clearly visible. Up to 60 meters of Wellenkalk is mined here. For centuries, this building stone was the goal of mining; today, Wellenkalk is used for gravel and lime production. Before the barrier, cross the road and use the underpass. On the opposite Saale bank, the campsite becomes visible again. Following the Rudelsburg promenade, the hiker reaches the spa park opposite the train station. Passing two imposing drinking halls for the brine well and the board: "Healing water from 255 million years old salt". Enjoy the view from the Saalebrücke to the weir and reach the starting point again after a few steps.
