Die Einführung der Reformation in Gera erfolgte erst 1533. Eine am 31. Oktober 1817 anlässlich des 300. Jahrestages der Reformation und des 4. Jahrestages der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig vom Regierungssekretär Christian Gottlieb Dinger gepflanzte "Lutherlinde" soll daran erinnern. Die Otto-Dix-Stadt Gera ist Geburtsort des weltweit bekannten Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix, einer der bedeutendsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Geburtshaus des Malers und Grafikers erwarten den Besucher eine Gemäldegalerie und das Ambiente eines Arbeiterhaushaltes um 1900. Bauhauswegbereiter Henry van de Velde konzipierte Haus Schulenburg 1913/14 als Wohnhaus für die Familie des Industriellen Paul Schulenburg und schuf damit ein Gesamtkunstwerk. Neben der Architektur gestaltete Henry van de Velde ebenfalls die Innenausstattung. Johann Sebastian Bach selbst prüfte im Jahr 1725 die Orgel in der Salvatorkirche. Die unmittelbar an der Weißen Elster gelegene spätgotische Marienkirche ist Wahrzeichen des Geraer Stadtteils Untermhaus. Um 1440 errichtet, beherbergt sie einen kostbaren spätgotischen Flügelaltar. Der Altarraum soll bereits 1193 erbaut worden sein, womit die Marienkirche zu den ältesten Kirchen Ostthüringens gehört. Bekannt sind auch die Geraer Höhler, in denen Bier in unterirdischen Labyrinthen aus Gängen und Nischen, fünf bis elf Meter unter der Erde gelagert wurde. Ein Teil der Höhler ist heute noch zu besichtigen. Auch wenn Bad Köstritz nicht unmittelbar am Lutherweg liegt, so lohnt sich ein Abstecher dorthin, dem Endpunkt der "Reußischen Fürstenstraße". Hier kam 1585 Heinrich Schütz, neben Johann Walter und Johann Sebastian Bach der "protestantischste" Komponist überhaupt, zur Welt. Der in Motetten, Historien oder Psalmvertonungen umgesetzte Bibeltext ist klingende Textausdeutung. Dies ganz im Sinne des Luther zugeschriebenen Spruches: "Wer musiziert, betet doppelt." 1627 fand im Schloss Osterstein Gera die Aufführung der Tragikomödie "Daphne" des eng mit dem Reußischen Hof verbundenen Komponisten Heinrich Schütz statt. Schmölln besitzt eine der größten Marktanlagen Mitteldeutschlands und ein sehenswertes Rathaus mit Sitznischenportal im Eingangsbereich, einer Freitreppe und Vorhangbogenfenstern. Die an der Vorderseite des Rathauses angebrachten gekreuzten Schwerter weisen auf das einstige Recht der Gerichtsbarkeit hin. Der Perlmutterknopfdrechsler Hermann Donath war es, der den Grundstein für die Schmöllner Knopfindustrie legte. Heute erhält man im Knopf- und Regionalmuseum einen umfangreichen Überblick über die wechselvolle Geschichte der Schmöllner Knopfindustrie.

L’introduction de la Réforme à Gera n’a eu lieu qu’en 1533. La ville d’Otto-Dix, Gera, est le lieu de naissance du célèbre Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix, l’un des artistes les plus importants du XXe siècle. La maison natale du peintre et graveur accueille les visiteurs avec une galerie de peintures et l’ambiance d’un foyer ouvrier vers 1900. Le pionnier du Bauhaus Henry van de Velde a conçu la maison Schulenburg en 1913/14 comme résidence pour la famille de l’industriel Paul Schulenburg, créant ainsi une œuvre d’art totale. Outre l’architecture, Henry van de Velde a également conçu l’aménagement intérieur. Johann Sebastian Bach a lui-même testé l’orgue de l’église Salvatorkirche en 1725. L’église tardogothique Marienkirche, située directement sur la Weiße Elster, est un symbole du quartier Untermhaus de Gera. Construite vers 1440, elle abrite un précieux retable tardogothique à volets. Le chœur aurait été construit dès 1193, faisant de cette église l’une des plus anciennes d’Ostthüringen. Les célèbres caves de Gera, où la bière était conservée dans des labyrinthes souterrains de galeries et niches, à cinq à onze mètres sous terre, sont également renommées. Une partie des caves est encore visitable aujourd’hui. Bien que Bad Köstritz ne soit pas directement sur le chemin de Luther, une excursion mérite d’être faite jusqu’à ce point final de la „Reußische Fürstenstraße“. C’est ici qu’est né en 1585 Heinrich Schütz, considéré avec Johann Walter et Johann Sebastian Bach comme le compositeur le plus protestant. Le texte biblique mis en musique en motets, histoires ou psaumes est une interprétation sonore du texte. Cela va dans le sens de la maxime attribuée à Luther : „Celui qui fait de la musique, prie deux fois.“ En 1627, le château d’Osterstein à Gera a accueilli la représentation de la tragicomédie „Daphne“ du compositeur Heinrich Schütz, étroitement lié à la cour de Reuß. Schmölln possède l’une des plus grandes places de marché d’Allemagne centrale et un hôtel de ville remarquable avec un portail à niches, un escalier extérieur et des fenêtres en arc. Les épées croisées sur la façade rappellent l’ancienne juridiction. Hermann Donath, tourneur sur boutons en nacre, posa la première pierre de l’industrie des boutons de Schmölln. Aujourd’hui, le musée du bouton et régional offre un aperçu complet de l’histoire mouvementée de cette industrie.

The Gera cellars, where beer was stored five to eleven meters underground in labyrinths of tunnels and niches, are also well known. Part of the cellars can still be visited today. Although Bad Köstritz is not directly on the Luther Trail, a detour there is worth it, as the endpoint of the "Reußische Fürstenstraße." Heinrich Schütz, considered the most Protestant composer alongside Johann Walter and Johann Sebastian Bach, was born here in 1585. The biblical text set in motets, histories, or psalm settings is a sonic interpretation of the text, fully in the spirit of the Luther quote: "He who makes music prays twice." In 1627, the tragicomedy "Daphne" by Heinrich Schütz, closely connected with the Reuß court, was performed at Osterstein Castle in Gera. Schmölln has one of the largest market squares in central Germany and a noteworthy town hall with a portal with seating niches at the entrance area, a grand staircase, and arched curtain windows. The crossed swords attached to the front of the town hall point to the former jurisdiction rights. Hermann Donath, a mother-of-pearl button turner, laid the foundation for the Schmölln button industry. Today, the Button and Regional Museum provides a comprehensive overview of the eventful history of the Schmölln button industry.
