Die Zechsteinriffe um Pößneck sind als geologische Formationen und als Zeugnisse urzeitlicher Verhältnisse durch ihre vollständige Erhaltung einmalig in Europa. Die Altenburg ist als Kuppelriff direkt in Pößneck von besonderer Bedeutung. (Prof. Paul, Göttingen) 257 Millionen Jahre existiert das Zechsteinriff Altenburg bereits. Der Nordhang der Altenburg ist durch eine Vielzahl von blumenkohlartigen Felsgebilden, schmalen Klippen und kleinen Höhlen geprägt. An der Nordostseite fallen dagegen die senkrechten Felswände auf. Hier wurden im 19. Jh. Steinbrucharbeiten betrieben, die ein kleines Stück des Berges abtrugen. Auf dem Plateau der Altenburg stand im 12./13. Jh. eine Burg. In den 1960er Jahren fand man Mauerreste eines sauber gearbeiteten Quadermauerwerkes, die die Burganlage bestätigen. Die Bildermollenhöhle wurde nach dem Tuchmacher Ludwig Molle (1823-1902) benannt, der in den Sommermonaten in dieser Höhle wohnte. Bildermolle war ein armer Mann, der sich mit guten Gaben und kleineren Gefälligkeiten über Wasser hielt. Den Spitznamen erhielt er, weil er an seiner Jacke und Mütze zahlreiche Orden und Bilder trug.

Le flanc nord de l’Altenburg est caractérisé par de nombreuses formations rocheuses en forme de chou-fleur, des falaises étroites et de petites grottes. Sur le côté nord-est, ce sont les parois rocheuses verticales qui attirent l’attention. Au 19e siècle, on y a fait de l’extraction de pierre qui a enlevé un petit morceau de la montagne. Sur le plateau de l’Altenburg se trouvait un château aux 12e/13e siècles. Dans les années 1960, on a trouvé des restes muraux d’un appareil en pierre taillée qui confirment l’existence du château. La caverne Bildermollen a été nommée d’après le fabricant de tissus Ludwig Molle (1823-1902), qui y vivait pendant les mois d’été. Bildermolle était un homme pauvre qui subsistait grâce à de bonnes actions et de petits services. Il a reçu ce surnom parce qu’il portait de nombreuses décorations et images sur sa veste et son chapeau.

The north slope of the Altenburg is characterized by a variety of cauliflower-shaped rock formations, narrow cliffs, and small caves. The northeast side, in contrast, shows the steep rock walls. In the 19th century, quarrying was carried out here that removed a small part of the mountain. On the Altenburg plateau stood a castle in the 12th/13th century. In the 1960s, remains of a neatly crafted ashlar masonry were found confirming the castle complex. The Bildermollen cave was named after the cloth maker Ludwig Molle (1823–1902), who lived in this cave during the summer months. Bildermolle was a poor man who made a living with good gifts and small favors. He got the nickname because he wore numerous medals and pictures on his jacket and cap.
