A weekend full of experiences: FreiLandAugust offers a wide variety of activities—demonstrations of traditional crafts, special tours of the Rhön Museum, cooking based on historical recipes, fresh pastries from the historic bakehouse, children’s theater on Saturday, and the museum train running on steam power on Sunday.Rhön Carnival TraditionCraft Demonstrations at the Open-Air Museum | Themed Tours at the Rhön MuseumExperience rare crafts up close and watch woodcarvers at work on the museum grounds as they create Carnival masks and Oberelsbach “Spanmänner.”The elaborately crafted “Spanmann” costumes, featuring around 1,000 planed poplar shavings, are a special testament to the region’s Carnival culture. You can also see a fully costumed Oberelsbach “Spanmann” at the neighboring Rhön Museum in Fladungen.Rhön Artists’ CollectiveAlso appearing at FreiLandAugust is the Rhön Artists’ Collective, which offers insights into the creative work of the female wood sculptors.Baking Day at the Museum What a wonderful smell! Baking takes place in the wood-fired oven at the historic community bakehouse in Oberbernhards. Early in the morning, the oven is stoked with brushwood so that crispy, fresh delicacies can be served later. Sales take place right at the bakehouse. Baked goods are available from approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or while supplies last.Cooking Demonstration with Historic RecipesFrom 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the three-sided farmstead from Leutershausen, participants will be stirring, chopping, kneading, and cooking. The recipes come from historic cookbooks of the Rhön region, and only ingredients found in the museum gardens or preserved or dried the previous year will be served. Seasonal and regional ingredients are therefore at the top of the list here. If you want to see what’s on the menu, you’re welcome to pitch in during the historical cooking program! The cooks at the open-air museum will show you how it’s done, and everyone is invited to join in. Of course, there will be a tasting at the end.Children’s Theater on SaturdayAt 2:00 p.m., the Plastische Theater Hobbit from Würzburg will perform the puppet show “Ü wie Üchtel” for children ages 3 and up (running time approx. 45 min).Ü wie Üchtel... and like “Übertopf,” “Überschwemmung,” “über Kopf,” “über Nacht,” “Überbleibsel,” and so on. A lot happens here—an awful lot: surprising things, overwhelming things. Some events come one after another. Üchtel and Paule are almost overwhelmed on their mountains. But they tackle the situation thoughtfully and without rushing. Thanks to an agreement, everyone is overjoyed in the end.Rides on the Museum Train on SundayAs a special way to travel to Fladungen, a steam train ride on the Rhön-Zügle museum railway is available on Sunday, August 23, departing from Mellrichstadt or Ostheim v. d. Rhön.

Handwerksvorführungen im Freilandmuseum | Themenführungen im Rhönmuseum
Erleben Sie seltenes Handwerk hautnah und schauen Sie im Museumsgelände Holzschnitzern bei der Herstellung von Fastnachtsmasken und Oberelsbacher Spanmännern über die Schulter.
Die aufwendig gefertigten Spanmann-Kostüme mit ihren rund 1.000 gehobelten Pappelspänen sind ein besonderes Zeugnis der regionalen Fastnachtskultur. Einen vollständig ausgestatteten Oberelsbacher Spanmann können Sie auch im benachbarten Rhönmuseum Fladungen entdecken.
KünstlerKollektiv Rhön
Ebenfalls zu Gast beim FreiLandAugust ist das KünstlerKollektiv Rhön, das Einblicke in die kreative Arbeit der Holzbildhauerinnen gibt.
Backtag im Museum
Wie das duftet! Im historischen Gemeindebackhaus aus Oberbernhards wird im Holzofen gebacken. Früh am Morgen wird der Backofen mit Reisig angeheizt, damit später knusprig frische Köstlichkeiten auf den Tisch kommen. Der Verkauf findet direkt am Backhaus statt. Die Backwaren erhalten Sie von ca. 11 bis 15 Uhr bzw. solange der Vorrat reicht.
Kochprogramm mit historischen Rezepten
Von 11 bis 15 Uhr wird im Dreiseithof aus Leutershausen der Kochlöffel geschwungen und geschnippelt, geknetet und gekocht. Die Rezepte stammen aus historischen Kochbüchern der Rhön und auf den Tisch kommt nur, was es in den Museumsgärten zu finden gibt oder im Vorjahr eingemacht oder getrocknet wurde. Saisonal und regional steht hier also ganz oben auf der Liste.
Wer sehen will, was auf den Tisch kommt, der darf beim historischen Kochprogramm selbst mit anpacken! Die Köchinnen und Köche des Freilandmuseums zeigen, wie es geht und jeder darf mitkochen. Probiert wird zum Schluss natürlich auch.
Kindertheater am Samstag
Um 14 Uhr spielt das Plastische Theater Hobbit aus Würzburg das Puppentheater-Stück "Ü wie Üchtel" für Kinder ab 3 Jahren (Dauer ca. 45 min).
Ü wie Üchtel... und wie Übertopf, Überschwemmung, über Kopf, über Nacht, Überbleibsel und überhaupt. Hier passiert viel, übelst viel: Überraschendes, Überwältigendes. Manche Ereignisse überstürzen sich. Fast sind Üchtel und Paule auf ihren Bergen überfordert. Aber sie packen die Sache überlegt und ohne Überstürzung an. Dank einer Übereinkunft sind am Ende alle überglücklich.
Fahrten mit der Museumsbahn am Sonntag
Als besondere Anreisemöglichkeit nach Fladungen bietet sich am Sonntag, 23. August eine Dampf-Fahrt mit der Museumsbahn Rhön-Zügle ab Mellrichstadt bzw. Ostheim v. d. Rhön an.
