Hier findet man auf kleinster Fläche eine große Zahl verschiedener Laubbaumarten, u.a. auch die seltene Elsbeere. Im Frühjahr sind Orchideen zu bewundern. Wir folgen nun dem Weg nach links hinab zum Steingraben. Durch den Steingraben Der Steingraben ist ein typisches Beispiel für die nur periodisch wasserführenden Bäche des Hainich. Nur nach starken Niederschlägen oder während der Schneeschmelze fließt hier Wasser, deshalb ist er meist lediglich mit Steinen gefüllt. Ansonsten versickert das Wasser im verkarsteten Untergrund, wird unterirdisch nach Nordosten geleitet und tritt erst am Fuße des Hainich in Form von Karstquellen wieder zutage. Nach Überqueren des Steingrabens gelangt der Wanderer in einen Buchenwald mit artenreichem Unterwuchs. Buchenwald Im Frühjahr erfreuen im Buchenwald beispielsweise die weiße Blütenpracht der Maiglöckchen, die duftenden Blüten vom Seidelbast und die zarten Waldveilchen das Auge des aufmerksamen Wanderers. An den eingestreuten Nadelbäumen lässt sich noch das Wirken des Menschen erkennen. Der Wanderweg führt an einigen umgestürzten Bäumen entlang, dem liegenden Totholz. Hier kann man die großen runden Wurzelteller der Bäume anschauen. Der Weg verlässt den Buchenwald. Am Waldrand fallen ausladende Eichen und mächtige Feldahorne (ein mehrstämmiger Feldahorn ist der dickste seiner Art im Nationalpark) auf. Der Wanderer blickt nun auf mit Büschen und Hecken bestandene Grasflächen. Vom Truppenübungsplatz zum Lebensraum Offenland Das Gelände gehörte seit 1971 zum Truppenübungsplatz Weberstedt. Hier fanden die Taktikausbildung und militärische Übungen statt. Die Grasflächen wurden bis 1998 mit Schafen beweidet, um die Sukzession, d.h. die natürliche Entwicklung hin zum Wald, aufzuhalten und die Flächen befahrbar zu halten. Bewehrte Pflanzen wie Schlehe und Hauhechel oder schlecht schmeckende und giftige Arten wie die ab Ende August in zartem Rosa erblühende Herbstzeitlose wurden durch die Beweidung gefördert. Im Ergebnis entstanden wertvolle extensiv genutzte Offenlandlebensräume, die in unserer intensiv genutzten Kulturlandschaft nur noch sehr selten zu finden sind. Sie bieten seltenen Vogelarten (bspw. Neuntöter), Schmetterlingen und Amphibien einen Lebensraum. Weitere typische Vogelarten dieser Flächen sind Feldschwirl, Feldlerche und Goldammer. Im Rahmen des NATURA 2000 Schutzgebietsnetzes werden sie auch heute besonders geschützt und durch Pflegeeingriffe und Beweidung offengehalten. Links geht es wieder zurück zur Thiemsburg. Im weiteren Wegverlauf fällt der dort angelegte Fichtenforst ins Auge. Der gesamte Fichtenbestand ist abgestorben. Sein Unterwuchs setzt sich fast ausschließlich aus jungen Buchen und Ahornen zusammen. Beides ein deutliches Zeichen dafür, dass Fichten hier von Natur aus nicht vorkommen. Der Weg wendet sich wieder nach Norden und wir wandern auf der Nationalparkgrenze. Am aus Bad Langensalza kommenden Radweg angelangt, biegt man nach links ab. Der Weg wird hier von den gelb-grünen, länglichen Blütenständen des Färberwaid, einer alten Färbepflanze, und den violetten, im Herbst braunen Blütenköpfen der Wilden Karde gesäumt. Ebenso passieren wir einem kleinen Bestand an Wacholder. Bald erreicht man wieder den Steingraben, wo man das anstehende Gestein gut erkennen kann. Kalkgestein Das helle Kalkgestein, aus dem sich der Hainich zusammensetzt, entstand vor etwas mehr als 200 Millionen Jahren. Damals befand sich das Gebiet des heutigen Hainich am Grunde eines flachen Meeres. Aus den abgelagerten Kalkschalen abgestorbener Meerestiere (u.a.) bildeten sich im Laufe von Jahrmillionen die Gesteinsschichten des Muschelkalk, aus dem sich der Hainich überwiegend zusammensetzt. Den letzten Kilometer, bevor man zum Ausgangspunkt zurück gelangt, legt der Wanderer wieder im Wald zurück. Der Weg verläuft hier an der Bachaue des Steingrabens entlang, wo im Frühjahr die Märzenbecher in großer Zahl zu bewundern sind.

The hiker now looks out onto grassy areas covered with bushes and hedges. From military training area to open space habitat The area belonged to the Weberstedt military training area from 1971. Tactics training and military exercises took place here. The grassy areas were grazed by sheep until 1998 to halt succession, i.e. the natural development towards forest, and to keep the areas passable. Plants that are resistant to grazing, such as blackthorn and knapweed, or bad-tasting and poisonous species such as meadow saffron, which blossoms in a delicate pink from the end of August, were encouraged by grazing. As a result, valuable extensively used open land habitats were created, which are very rarely found in our intensively used cultivated landscape. They provide a habitat for rare bird species (e.g. red-backed shrike), butterflies and amphibians. Other typical bird species in these areas are the warbler, skylark and yellowhammer. As part of the NATURA 2000 network of protected areas, they are also specially protected today and kept open through maintenance interventions and grazing. The Steinberg Trail follows the National Park boundaries almost throughout its entire course. In some sections, for example, you will find intensively farmed arable land just a few metres from the path - the contrast could not be clearer. Doline (sinkhole) Soon the path passes a funnel-shaped depression, at the bottom of which an old willow thrives. This is by no means a shell crater, as one might assume from the former military use of the land, but a so-called sinkhole (or sinkhole). It was formed in the course of the washing out of an underground gypsum deposit, in the aftermath of which the resulting cavity collapsed. Breathtaking distant views Further on, along the edge of a forest, there are numerous small bodies of water that dry up in the spring. Soon afterwards, the hiker is rewarded with an impressive distant view of the Thuringian Forest with the Great Inselsberg. A perch invites you to take a break. Finally, you reach a beautiful linden-rich oak-hornbeam forest, the Netzbornholz, whose ground is covered with a magnificent carpet of flowers in spring. With a little luck, the middle spotted woodpecker can be spotted here. After crossing the forest, the hiker comes across the balance beam path directly at the National Park boundary. Turn left to return to Thiemsburg Castle. As the trail continues, the spruce forest planted there catches the eye. The entire spruce stand is dead. Its undergrowth consists almost exclusively of young beech and maple trees. Both are a clear sign that spruces do not occur here by nature. Left to its natural development, the spruce stand will thus change over time into a deciduous forest with beech dominance. The path turns north again and we walk along the National Park border. When you reach the cycle path coming from Bad Langensalza, turn left. The path is lined here by the yellow-green, elongated inflorescences of woad, an old dyeing plant, and the purple flower heads of wild cardoon, which turn brown in autumn. We also pass a small stand of juniper. Soon you reach the stone ditch again, where you can clearly see the rock outcrops. Limestone The light-coloured limestone that makes up the Hainich was formed more than 200 million years ago. At that time, the area of today's Hainich was at the bottom of a shallow sea. Over millions of years, the rock layers of the shell limestone, of which the Hainich is predominantly composed, were formed from the deposited limestone shells of dead marine animals (among others). The last kilometre before returning to the starting point is again in the forest. The path runs along the Steingraben stream meadow, where in spring you can admire the large numbers of spring snowflakes.
