The hike leads over the Burgberg. Once there, the extent and nature of the former castle complex are still clearly visible in the terrain. The construction of Raspenburg on the Burgberg probably dates back to the years 1070-1078. There are only contradictory statements about the history of the castle from the first decades. It remains open that the builders of the castle were the sons of Ludwig the Bearded, Ludwig the Springer, or his brother Heinrich Raspe (i.e., the Rough). From the year 1252, the owners of Raspenburg are documented. In the first written record about Rastenberg from this year, two brothers "Heinrich and Albert von Raspenberck" are named. The castle was located near the west-east running trade route "Via Regia" and at the passes (ancient roads, including the Copper Road) over the Finne and degenerated over time into a notorious robber baron nest. Therefore, it was destroyed in 1321 by Landgrave Friedrich (the Biter) with the help of merchants from Mühlhausen and Erfurt. Today, only a remnant of the bergfried wall can be seen. It measures 32 m in circumference and has a 2.5 m thick wall. On the way to the town, hikers are offered beautiful views over the place and into the Thuringian Basin. During a small tour through the town of Rastenberg, the town hall immediately catches the eye. The town hall was built in 1565 but burned down in 1637 during the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), along with many residential and farm buildings. At that time, the buildings were still thatched with straw, so fires could develop very quickly. In the same year, it was rebuilt at the same location. The cellar vault and the central part belong to the oldest parts of the building. Further along, we see beautiful historic portals, house entrances, and arches as well as the old city wall with the two still-preserved defensive towers. The city wall with its towers enclosed the southern and western parts of the town, which was protected to the north and east by the forests of the Finne. In 1711, the wall was renewed again; the moat in front of it was filled in 1840. The next station is the town church. A devastating fire destroyed large parts of the town on March 23, 1824. The town church also fell victim to this fire, burning down to its foundations. Reconstruction began in the same year in the neoclassical style according to plans by the Weimar architect of the Goethe era, Coudray. We head towards the small park area and enter the Streitholz forest. Prehistoric finds testify that the area of today's town of Rastenberg with its districts has been settled since the Paleolithic era. Numerous finds from the Mesolithic period prove human life in the southwestern foreland of the Finne, with its fertile soils. In the Streitholz, six burial mounds and a rampart, a refuge castle from the Bronze Age, can be discovered. Both date to about 1500 years before the common era. Further through the Streitholz past the quarry over the heath* towards Rothenberga. After Rothenberga, we follow the Finne cycle path. Parallel to the cycle path runs a very well passable field path as an alternative to the asphalt. ____________________ *WASTELAND ORLIS. The heath fields have been named as an independent area with upper, middle, and lower fields since 1727. This tripartition with the three-field system also remained during the separation from 1870 to 1880. Presumably, it is the area of the devastated village of Orlis (called Orlex in 1727, then Orlix). ____________________ It goes briefly through the little village of Rothenberga and over an old former connecting road to the campsite and further through the Mühltal valley to the starting point of the hike. From the Finneck Foundation, at the Red Villa, the path follows the Röhrenfahrt. In 1886, the bathing business in Rastenberg increased significantly. The healing springs were gushing again at that time. To transport the water to the bathhouse in the town, a pipeline with steam-powered pumps was built, thus eliminating the elaborate transport of the precious water. Furthermore, we pay attention to the exposure with brick-red Buntsandstein (colored sandstone). Its beds are steeply positioned, partially overturned, thrust over, and fractured. Again, we recognize in this rock formation the effect of the Finne disturbance.
