Nun geht es auf einem breiten Weg immer leicht bergauf in den Nationalpark hinein. Hohe Straße Dieser Weg hat Geschichte, denn es handelt sich um die „Hohe Straße“, eine der wichtigsten Passstraßen über den Hainich. Auf diesem Handelsweg wurden im Mittelalter Salz, Waid und Getreide aus der Gegend um Bad Langensalza und Craula hinab ins Werratal transportiert. Von dort ging es per Boot und Schiff weiter bis an die deutschen und niederländischen Nordseehäfen. Steinerner Tisch Etwa 800 m nach der Schranke besteht die erste Möglichkeit zur Rast am „Steinernen Tisch“. Vermutlich diente dieser Ort bereits im Mittelalter als Rastplatz und Ausspanne der Fuhrleute an der „Hohen Straße“. Von Westen kommend hatten sie hier den steilsten Anstieg überwunden. Frühblüher Im schönen, alten Buchenwald rechts und links des Weges blühen im Frühjahr zahlreiche Frühblüher wie Buschwindröschen, Leberblümchen und Scharbockskraut. Mülverstedter Kreuz Wenn der Weg nach links abbiegt, erreichen wir das Mülverstedter Kreuz. Seinen Namen verdankt dieses im 15. Jahrhundert entstandene Flurdenkmal der Tatsache, dass es trotz neun km Entfernung zum Ort Mülverstedt zu dessen Gemarkung gehört. Es besitzt keine Zeichen und Inschriften. So ist der Anlass seiner Entstehung unbekannt. Es könnte sich um ein Steinkreuz für einen Verstorbenen handeln, wie man einige im Hainich findet. Hier verlassen wir die Hohe Straße und wandern nach rechts auf einem schmalen Wanderpfad weiter. Bärlauch Der Wald wird immer uriger. Umgestürzte Buchen mit riesigen Wurzeltellern liegen im Wald. Hier wachsen üppige Bestande von Bärlauch, dessen grüne Blätter bereits im April einen zartgrünen Teppich auf den Waldboden zaubert. Im Mai ist dann Blütezeit. Am Kalkgrund Wer hier Pause machen möchte, hat schon bald Gelegenheit dazu, denn am Wegesrand steht eine Sitzraufe. In südwestlicher Richtung steigen wir nun zunächst gemächlich, später Serpentinen hinunter in den Kalkgrund. Am Wegesrand steht eine dicke und noch sehr vitale Fichte, eine Relikt aus der forstlichen Bewirtschaftung des Hainich. Fichten würden von Natur aus hier nicht wachsen. Zwei Varianten für den Rückweg Wir wandern weiter im schönen Kalkgrund. Bald müssen wir uns entscheiden, ob wir auf kurzer oder längerer Stecke zum Parkplatz wandern möchten. Die kurze Strecke führt innerhalb des Nationalpark über den Urwaldpfad zurück zum Parkplatz. Die längere Strecke führt aus dem Nationalpark hinaus über Wiesen und Äcker vorbei an einem lohnenswerten Aussichtspunkt mit beeindruckendem Blick über das Werratal zurück zum Parkplatz. Die Grenze zwischen National-und Naturpark ist kaum zu übersehen. Direkt hinter der Grenze wird der Buchenwald intensiv forstwirtschaftlich genutzt.

Here we leave the Hohe Straße and continue to the right on a narrow hiking trail. Wild garlic The forest becomes more and more rustic. Fallen beech trees with huge root plates lie on the ground. Lush populations of wild garlic grow here, whose green leaves conjure up a tender green carpet on the forest floor as early as April. May is then flowering time. At the Kalkgrund If you want to take a break here, you will soon have the opportunity to do so, because there is a seat on the edge of the path. In a southwesterly direction, we now climb leisurely at first, later serpentines down into the Kalkgrund. At the edge of the path stands a thick and still very vital spruce, a relic from the forestry management of the Hainich. Spruces would not grow here by nature. Two options for the way back We continue hiking in the beautiful limestone ground. Soon we have to decide whether we want to hike a short or a longer distance to the parking lot. The short route leads inside the national park via the primeval forest path back to the parking lot. The longer route leads out of the national park across meadows and fields past a worthwhile vantage point with an impressive view over the Werra valley back to the parking lot. The border between the national park and the nature park can hardly be overlooked. Directly behind the border, the beech forest is intensively used for forestry.
