Fast 40 Jahre lang trennte die innerdeutsche Grenze den äußersten Norden Bayerns vom südlichsten Teil Thüringens und entzweite Deutschland in die BundesrepublikDeutschland (BRD) und die Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR). Gleichzeitig trennte sie aber auch die gesamte Welt in einen kapitalistischen Westen und einen sozialistischen Osten. Was bei dieser internationalen Tragweite oft vergessen wird: Für das Leben und die Lebensweise derjenigen, die in unmittelbarere Nähe dieser Grenze wohnten, war der Einschnitt häufig noch viel dramatischer. Von einem Tag auf den anderen verlief eine Grenze durch Hinterhöfe und entzweite Familien und Freunde.

For almost 40 years, the inner-German border separated the northernmost part of Bavaria from the southernmost part of Thuringia and divided Germany into the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). At the same time, it also divided the entire world into a capitalist West and a socialist East. What is often forgotten amid this international significance: For the life and lifestyle of those who lived in close proximity to this border, the rupture was often much more dramatic. From one day to the next, a border ran through backyards and divided families and friends.

La frontière intérieure allemande a séparé pendant près de 40 ans l'extrême nord de la Bavière de la partie la plus méridionale de la Thuringe et a divisé l'Allemagne en République fédérale d'Allemagne (RFA) et République démocratique allemande (RDA). En même temps, elle a également divisé le monde entier entre un Ouest capitaliste et un Est socialiste.
