Il y a près de 450 millions d'années, la région était située bien loin de son emplacement actuel, sur l'hémisphère sud (environ 30 degrés de latitude sud). En tant que découverte secrète, vous apprendrez beaucoup de choses inattendues sur une histoire minière et de fonderie presque oubliée qui remonte à plus de 500 ans. Outre les débuts de l'industrie du fer (extraction et fusion), la proximité du Rennsteig et de la voie commerciale très importante Nuremberg - Leipzig a conduit à la création d'une fonderie de saumure à Hasenthal. La région forestière du massif des ardoises franconiennes-thuringiennes ainsi que la situation sur la voie commerciale, la rivière riche en eau Oelse et les forêts primaires presque infinies (charbon de bois) étaient favorables à cet égard. En plus de l'extraction de minerais de fer, de l'ocre et de la chaux, les quartzites ordoviciens locaux ont servi à la construction de bâtiments. La région entre Steinach - Hasenthal - Spechtsbrunn (au nord de la flexure de Steinach jusqu'au Rennsteig) a acquis une renommée mondiale grâce à la formation particulière des ardoises ordoviciennes présentes, les ardoises à griffes. Le long du GeoParcours, il y avait au total trois grandes carrières d'ardoises à griffes regroupées en deux grandes fonderies d'État (Langebach et Brand) avec de très belles carrières d'ardoises à griffes dégagées, qui existent encore aujourd'hui en tant que géotopes (!). Seule la carrière d'ardoise à griffes près de Brand peut être observée de loin (Rennsteig) le long du GeoParcours. De nombreux endroits pour se reposer invitent à faire une pause et à se détendre (découverte secrète loin de la civilisation). Outre les aspects géologiques, miniers et techniques de la fonderie, vous marcherez le long de noms de lieux importants ainsi que d'une section du légendaire Rennsteig qui, ici, était inaccessible jusqu'en 1989 en raison de la zone frontalière de la RDA. À quelques endroits marquants, vous bénéficierez de très beaux points de vue panoramiques dans et sur la région (par exemple le point de vue sur la forêt de Franconie avec vue sur le massif de Fichtelgebirge [seulement par beau temps !]) ainsi que de vues impressionnantes sur les vallées encaissées. Vous parcourez environ 2,5 km le long d'un petit sentier du Brand vers Hasenthal, probablement utilisé autrefois par les travailleurs des ardoises de la grande fonderie de Brand.

Nearly 450 million years ago, the region lay far from its present location on the southern hemisphere (about 30 degrees south latitude). As an insider tip, you will learn much unexpected about an almost forgotten mining and smelting history going back well over 500 years. In addition to the early beginnings of the iron industry (extraction and smelting), the proximity to the Rennsteig and the important trade route Nuremberg - Leipzig led to the founding of a finery forge in Hasenthal. The forested area of the Thuringian-Franconian Slate Mountains as well as the location on the trade route, the water-rich Oelse river, and the almost endless primeval forests (charcoal) offered ideal conditions. Besides iron ore mining, ochre and lime extraction, the local Ordovician phycodophyte quartzites served house construction. The region between Steinach - Hasenthal - Spechtsbrunn (north of the Steinach flexure up to the Rennsteig) gained world-renowned significance due to the special stratification of the Ordovician slate present there, the graphite slates. Along the GeoTrail there were three large graphite slate quarries that were combined into two state-owned major smelters (Langebach and Brand) with very nicely exposed graphite slate quarries, which still exist today as geotopes (!). Only the graphite slate quarry at Brand can be viewed from a distance along the GeoTrail (Rennsteig). Numerous rest areas invite you to linger and rest (insider tip far away from civilization). In addition to the geological, mining, and smelting technical backgrounds, you will hike along significant field names and places as well as a section of the legendary Rennsteig, which was still inaccessible until 1989 in the border restricted area of the GDR. At some prominent locations you have very beautiful panoramic and insight viewpoints from and into the region (e.g., Franconian Forest view with sights up to the Fichtel Mountains [only in good weather!]) and magnificent gorge views. About 2.5 km is hiked along a small path from Brand to Hasenthal which was probably used in earlier times by the graphite workers of the major smelter Brand.

Vor fast 450 Millionen Jahren lag die Region weitab der heutigen Lage auf der Südhalbkügel (etwa 30 Grad südlicher Breite). Als Geheimtipp erfahren Sie viel unerwartetes über eine fast vergessenen Bergbau- und Hüttengeschichte, die weit über 500 Jahre zurückreicht. Neben den ersten Anfängen der Eisenindustrie (Abbau und Verhüttung) folgten aufgrund der Nähe zum Rennsteig und der sehr bedeutenden Handelsstraße Nürnberg - Leipzig die Gründung einer Saigerhütte in Hasenthal. Die waldreiche Gegend des Thüringisch-Fänkischen Schiefergebirges sowie die Lage an der Handelsstraße, der wasserreichen Oelse sowie der nahezu unendlichen Urwälder (Holzkohle) boten sich diesbezüglich an. Neben Eisenerzabbau, der Ocker- und Kalkgewinnung dienten die lokalen ordovizischen Phycodenquarzite dem Hausbau. Bedeutung von Weltruhm erlangte die Region zwischen Steinach - Hasenthal - Spechtsbrunn (nördlich der Steinacher Flexur bis zum Rennsteig) aufgrund der besonderen Lagerung der dort vorhanden ordovizischen Schiefer, den Griffelschiefern. Insgesamt gab es entlang des GeoPfades drei große Griffelschieferbrüche die zu 2 staatlichen Großhütten (Langebach und Brand) mit sehr schönen aufgeschlossenen Griffelschieferbrüchen zusammengefasst wurden und heute noch als Geotope (!) existieren. Nur den Griffelschieferbruch beim Brand können Sie entlang des Geopfades von weitem  (Rennsteig) besichtigen. Zahlreiche Rastmöglichkeiten laden zum verweilen und zur Rast (Geheimtipp weitab der Zivilisation). Neben den geologischen, bergmannischen und hüttentechnischen HIntergründen wandern Sie entlang bedeutender Flurnamen und -orte sowie einem Teilstück des legendären Rennsteigs entlang, der hier noch bis 1989 im Grenzsperrgebiet der DDR unzugänglich war. An einigen markanten Stellen haben Sie sehr schöne Fernsich- und Einsichtstandorte aus und in die Region (z. B. Frankenwaldblick mit Blick  bis zum Fichtelgebirge [nur bei gutem Wetter!]) und grandiose Kerbtalblicke. Zirka 2,5 km wandern Sie entlang eines kleines Steiges vom Brand nach Hasenthal, der vermutlich in früherer Zeit von den Griffelarbeitern der Großhütte Brand genutzt wurde.
