Die Wanderung beginnt vorzugsweise am neugestalteten Infozentrum am Wanderparkplatz "Grenzblick". Hier bekommen Besucher einen Eindruck von der historisch bedeutsamen Region und dem Nationalen Naturmonument Grünes Band Thüringen. Zahlreiche interaktive Elemente laden auch die Kleinen zum Entdecken ein. Folgt man dem Rundwanderweg über den ehemaligen Kolonnenweg, kann man im Wald an der Grenze zu Hessen noch Grenzmarkierungen aus verschiedenen Epochen finden. Das Highlight der Tour ist der am Originalstandort verbliebene ehemalige Führungsturm der DDR-Grenztruppen, der durch die Gemeinde Südeichsfeld und den Heimatverein Wendehausen saniert wurde, um die Erinnerung auch für kommende Generationen zu erhalten. Im Inneren Befindet sich eine Ausstellung zum Turm und der Grenzgeschichte der Region. Rund 400 Meter vom Rundweg entfern (ausgeschildert) befindet sich außerdem noch ein Beobachtungstum vom Typ BT-9. Dieser ist zwar nicht zugänglich, aber die räumliche Nähe der beiden Türme am Originalstandort ist außergewöhnlich. Das Ortsbild von Katharinenberg wird von der Kirchenruine mit ihrem Turm ohne Spitze geprägt. Die ehemalige Wallfahrtskapelle der Spätgotik wurde nie ganz fertig gestellt und mehrfach beschädigt. Nur der Turm wurde nach dem Bauernkrieg instandgesetzt, da man ihn als Wachturm benötigte. Der Chorraum wurde überdacht, um dort Gottesdienste abhalten zu können. Das führt zu der Besonderheit der "Kirche in der Kirche".

La randonnée commence de préférence au centre d'information rénové du parking de randonnée "Grenzblick". Le point fort de la balade est l'ancienne tour de commandement des troupes frontalières de la RDA, conservée à son emplacement d'origine, restaurée par la commune de Südeichsfeld et l'association locale de Wendehausen afin de préserver le souvenir pour les générations futures. À l'intérieur, se trouve une exposition consacrée à la tour et à l'histoire frontalière de la région. Environ 400 mètres du sentier circulaire (signalé), se trouve également une tour d'observation de type BT-9. Celle-ci n’est pas accessible, mais la proximité spatiale des deux tours sur leur site d'origine est exceptionnelle. Le paysage urbain de Katharinenberg est dominé par les ruines de l’église avec sa tour sans flèche. L’ancienne chapelle de pèlerinage gothique tardif n’a jamais été complètement achevée et a été endommagée à plusieurs reprises. Seule la tour a été restaurée après la guerre des paysans, car elle était utilisée comme tour de guet. Le chœur a été couvert pour permettre la tenue de cultes. Cela conduit à la particularité de « l’église dans l’église ».

The hike preferably starts at the newly designed information center at the "Grenzblick" hiking parking lot. Here visitors get an impression of the historically significant region and the National Natural Monument Green Belt Thuringia. Numerous interactive elements also invite children to discover. Following the circular hiking trail along the former Kolonnenweg, you can still find border markers from different eras in the forest on the border with Hesse. The highlight of the hike is the former command tower of the GDR border troops remaining at its original site, which was renovated by the municipality Süd Eichsfeld and the Heimatverein Wendehausen to preserve the memory for future generations. Inside is an exhibition about the tower and the border history of the region. About 400 meters away from the circular trail (signposted) is also an observation tower of type BT-9. Although it is not accessible, the spatial proximity of the two towers at the original location is unusual. The townscape of Katharinenberg is shaped by the church ruins with its tower without a spire. The former pilgrimage chapel of late Gothic style was never fully completed and was damaged several times. Only the tower was repaired after the Peasants' War, as it was needed as a watchtower. The chancel was roofed over so that services could be held there. This leads to the peculiarity of the "church in the church".
