Mehr als 30 Jahre teilte Deutschland eine unmenschliche Grenze. Im Schatten des Todesstreifens konnte sich die Natur weitgehend unberührt entwickeln. Viele seltene Tier- und Pflanzenarten fanden hier Rückzugsgebiete. So ist ein wertvolles Biotopverbundsystem — das Grüne Band — entstanden. Der ehemalige Grenzstreifen mit seiner Gesamtlänge von 1.393 km stellt damit das größte Wald- und Offenland-Biotopverbundsystem Mitteleuropas dar — eine Perlenkette der Natur. Thüringen hat mit 763 km den längsten Abschnitt der ehemaligen innerdeutschen Grenze und trägt somit eine besondere Verantwortung. Ende 2018 wurde das „Grüne Band Thüringen“als Nationales Naturmonument (NNM) ausgewiesen. 89 km der ehemaligen Grenze verlaufen am Rande des Landkreises Sonneberg. Der Kolonnenweg der Grenztruppen de DDR wurde in ein touristisches Wegesystem integriert und erschließt nun das Nationale Naturmonument "Grünes Band Thüringen". Der Grenzwanderweg erschließt die noch vorhandenen Grenzsicherungsanlagen. Diese sind Zeugnis der jüngeren Geschichte und kulturhistorisch von großer Bedeutung.

For more than 30 years, Germany was divided by an inhumane border. In the shadow of the death strip, nature was able to develop largely undisturbed. Many rare animal and plant species found refuge here. Thus, a valuable biotope network—the Green Belt—has emerged. The former border strip with its total length of 1,393 km thus represents the largest forest and open-land biotope network in Central Europe—a necklace of nature. Thuringia has with 763 km the longest section of the former inner-German border and thus carries a special responsibility. At the end of 2018, the "Green Belt Thuringia" was designated as a National Natural Monument (NNM). 89 km of the former border run along the edge of the Sonneberg district. The patrol path of the DDR border troops was integrated into a tourist trail system and now opens up the National Natural Monument "Green Belt Thuringia". The border hiking trail opens up the still existing border security facilities. These are testimony to recent history and culturally and historically of great importance.

Plus de 30 ans ont séparé l'Allemagne par une frontière inhumaine. À l'ombre de la « zone morte », la nature a pu se développer en grande partie intacte. De nombreuses espèces rares d'animaux et de plantes ont trouvé ici des zones de refuge. Ainsi s'est créé un système précieux de corridors écologiques — le Ruban Vert —. L'ancienne zone frontalière, avec sa longueur totale de 1 393 km, constitue ainsi le plus grand système de corridors écologiques forestiers et ouverts d'Europe centrale — un collier de perles de la nature. La Thuringe possède avec 763 km le plus long tronçon de l'ancienne frontière intérieure allemande et porte donc une responsabilité particulière. Fin 2018, le « Ruban Vert de Thuringe » a été désigné comme Monument Naturel National (NNM). 89 km de l'ancienne frontière longent le district de Sonneberg. Le chemin de patrouille des troupes frontalières de la RDA a été intégré dans un système touristique de sentiers et ouvre désormais le Monument Naturel National "Ruban Vert de Thuringe". Le sentier de la frontière révèle les installations de sécurité encore existantes. Elles témoignent de l'histoire récente et ont une grande importance historique et culturelle.
