The Old Kassel Country Road, built in 1774 as one of the first planned German country roads, led from northern Germany via Göttingen to Kassel and Frankfurt. In 1827, it was replaced by the current B 496. Napoleon's troops marched over it to Russia and back, and the quadriga stolen by the French from the Brandenburg Gate was also transported via this road, passing the old Steinbach bridge in Bonaforth. The start of the approximately 8 km circular trail is at the information board of the Bonaforth Homeland and Cultural Association at the Fulda near the lock bridge. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended for the route. From the Memorial to the Murder Stones The path leads uphill through Bonaforth to the memorial on the Old Kassel Country Road. At the end of this paved road, the path turns into the Steinbach valley until just before the murder stones below the French bridge. The murder stones mark historical routes from the Migration Period to the Middle Ages. A steep track and the Kassel caves once crossed the Steinbach valley here. The murder stones commemorate the murder of the merchant Johann Kessler from Hann. Münden and his future son-in-law Georg Smalken. On their way home from Kassel in 1614, they were attacked, robbed, and killed by so-called "bad boys." Over a wooden footbridge, the path follows the X13 hiking trail. This trail is the student path, connecting the university towns of Göttingen, Kassel, Marburg, and Giessen. Here it leads as a small path through beech forests above the meadows of Bonaforth and offers especially in spring and autumn beautiful views of the village in the Fulda valley, the Reinhardswald, and the Münden Mountains. Along old trade routes past the Höllegrund At Bohlweg, early trade routes crossing from Thuringia and Frankfurt led over the ford in Bonaforth to the trading place Hann. Münden, the current path. The tracks worn by wagons are still visible today as hollow ways and ditches in the terrain. On a hill, the path crosses the Höllegrund (The name "Höllegrund" originates from the Middle Ages and is a variation of "Heller Grund." It refers to an unforested valley leading down to the former pasture forests near Bonaforth.), before it descends back into the Fulda valley via the Upper Wemmberg path and the Slanting Corner and returns to Bonaforth. Optional: Detour / extension of the loop from Bohlweg to the Gut Wissmannshof golf course with a year-round open restaurant.
