<p>Vor 500 Jahren wurde hier - im ehemaligen Pauritz - Safran in Gärten angebaut und gut bewacht. Zwei Gärtner erwischten einen Dieb, ließen ihn jedoch aus Mitleid laufen. Der Bürgermeister bestrafte beide wegen Strafvereitelung und den Dieb mit einem Bußgeld in Höhe von rund zwei Wochenlöhnen.</p>

Große Mengen Safran-Knollen wurden zur Lochau (heute Annaburg) gebracht, wo auch Altenburger Safrangärtner mit den wertvollen Pflanzen arbeiteten.</p>

"Saffron in Altenburg? An introduction"
Playing cards and saffron? Both have history in Altenburg! Mentioned as early as 1437, saffron once brought "several thousand talers" to the city treasury. It disappeared with the Thirty Years' War – now the "Red Gold" returns. At authentic Altenburg locations, you experience saffron history and stories!
Station 2 - Women's market
"The condemned female merchant"
The Altenburg market was the center of the saffron trade. Merchants and gardeners offered saffron, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, pepper, caraway, almonds, and incense. Saffron was a symbol of wealth. It was weighed in lots (1 lot =16 g). Trade and weights were strictly controlled; fraud was harshly punished.
Station 3 - Grain market
"Military wagon with luxury kitchen"
Over 500 years ago, Altenburg had to provide a military wagon for the Saxon Electorate in times of war – with artillery, ammunition, and provisions: butter, cheese, a pound of pepper, nearly a quarter pound of saffron. This led to saffron spit cake, today known as stick bread or skewer cake.
Station 4 - Malzberg
"Gardens between the gates"
Five hundred years ago, in the former Pauritz area, saffron was cultivated in gardens and well guarded. Two gardeners caught a thief but let him go out of pity. The mayor punished both for obstruction of justice and fined the thief about two weeks' wages.
Station 5 - Rosa Luxembourg Street
"Frederick the Wise and saffron"
Elector Frederick the Wise – patron of the Reformation and protector of Martin Luther – had saffron grown on the southern slope of Altenburg Castle Hill. Large amounts of saffron bulbs were brought to Lochau (today Annaburg), where Altenburg saffron gardeners also worked with the valuable plants.
Station 6 - Castle driveway
"Saffron and the electoral kitchen"
Since the mid-15th century, saffron along with ginger, pepper, cloves, and nutmeg was one of the exotic spices of the Saxon electoral kitchen. By 1500, it was extremely expensive but popular for many dishes. The 1471 kitchen book lists 40 pounds of saffron along with large amounts of pepper, ginger, cinnamon, sugar, and cloves.
Station 7 - Castle driveway
"The saffron garden"
In Altenburg city accounts from the 16th century, there are references to the plague years, including expenses for coffins, hospitals, and the "Golden Egg" – a precious remedy made from egg, saffron, and other ingredients. It served as prophylaxis and therapy and – despite uncertain effectiveness – was a symbol of hope.

"The electoral kitchen garden"
Between the teahouse and the former Marstall, the structures of the former kitchen garden are visible, which supplied the electoral kitchen with fresh herbs and vegetables. Besides cress, parsley, garlic, radish, horseradish, onions, and lettuce, there were also saffron beds. |
