Das Nikolaiviertel besticht durch seine beschauliche Atmosphäre, enge Gassen und liebevoll restaurierte Häuser. Der Nikolaiturm, Relikt des mittelalterlichen Nikolaikirchhofs, thront auf dem höchsten Punkt der Stadt und verleiht dem Viertel seinen besonderen Charme. Die Pfarrkirche St. Nikolai wird 1140 als Sitz des Archidiakons für das Pleißenland erwähnt. Nach Schließung der Kirche 1528 wird das Gebäude bis auf den Turm zurückgebaut. Der Turm steht heute singulär als einziger Rest der ehemaligen Kirche. Das in seinen unteren Teilen romanische Bauwerk wurde mehrfach umgebaut. Eine größere Restaurierung greift von 1876-78. Der Nikolaiturm ist derzeit ohne Anmeldung nicht zu besichtigen. Ab einer Gruppe von 12 Personen sind Führungen grundsätzlich möglich.
