120 Meter überragt der Petersberg als höchste Erhebung die Umgebung, rund 15 Kilometer von Halle (Saale) entfernt. Hoch oben thront majestätisch die romanische Klosteranlage des Klosters Petersberg mit der Stiftskirche St. Petrus. Letztere wurde im 12. Jahrhundert erbaut und diente sowohl als Gotteshaus des Augustiner-Chorherrenstifts als auch als Grabkirche für das Geschlecht der Wettiner. Diese Funktion hatte St. Petrus von 1124 bis 1538 – nach der Reformation wurde das Augustiner-Chorherrenstift aufgelöst. Wenig später besiegelte ein verheerender Brand das Schicksal der Stiftskirche, die in den folgenden zwei Jahrhunderten zusehends verfiel. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert - und nicht zuletzt aufgrund des Einsatzes berühmter Besucher wie Johann Wolfgang von Goethe oder Karl Friedrich Schinkel – wurde die Stiftskirche nach und nach restauriert und wiederaufgebaut. Dabei hielt man sich an den ursprünglichen Stil, sodass auf dem Petersberg eine romanische Basilika entstand, die dem Original recht ähnlich war. Entsprechend ist der Grundriss kreuzförmig und es gibt drei Kirchenschiffe. Diese sind jedoch sehr breit, was eher ungewöhnlich ist, aber vermutlich auf den Bauort hoch oben auf dem Felsen zurückzuführen ist. Heute ist die Augustinerstiftskirche eine Station an der Straße der Romanik und offen für Besucher. Eine Besonderheit ist, dass das angeschlossene Kloster nicht leer steht, sondern heute wieder in dieser Funktion genutzt wird: Hier leben Mönche und Nonnen der Communität Christusbruderschaft Selbitz. Sie ermöglichen Besuchern, an Gebeten und Gottesdiensten teilzunehmen. Darüber hinaus sind Führungen nach Anmeldung möglich.
The Petersberg rises 120 meters above its surroundings, about 15 kilometers from Halle (Saale). The Romanesque monastery complex of the Petersberg with the collegiate church of St. Peter rises majestically. The latter was built in the 12th century and served both as a place of worship for the Augustinian canons and as a burial church for the Wettin dynasty. St. Peter's had this function from 1124 to 1538 - after the Reformation the Augustinian monastery was dissolved. Shortly thereafter, a devastating fire sealed the fate of the collegiate church, which fell into increasing disrepair over the next two centuries. It was only in the 19th century, thanks to the efforts of famous visitors such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, that the Collegiate Church was gradually restored and rebuilt. The original style was maintained, resulting in a Romanesque Basilica on the Petersberg that is very similar to the original. Accordingly, the floor plan is cruciform and there are three naves. However, these are very wide, which is rather unusual, but probably due to the construction site high up on the rock. Today, the Augustinian Collegiate Church is a stop on the Romanesque Road and is open to visitors. A special feature is that the adjacent monastery is not empty, but is still in use: Monks and nuns of the Selbitz Brotherhood live here. They allow visitors to participate in prayers and services. Le Petersberg, qui culmine à 120 mètres, domine les environs à environ 15 kilomètres de Halle (Saale). Tout en haut trône majestueusement le monastère roman de Petersberg avec l'église collégiale Saint-Pierre. Cette dernière a été construite au XIIe siècle et servait à la fois d'église pour le chapitre des chanoines augustins et d'église funéraire pour la famille des Wettin. Saint-Pierre a rempli cette fonction de 1124 à 1538, date à laquelle le chapitre des chanoines augustins a été dissous après la Réforme. Peu après, un incendie dévastateur scella le sort de la collégiale, qui tomba progressivement en ruine au cours des deux siècles suivants. Ce n'est qu'au XIXe siècle, notamment grâce à l'engagement de visiteurs célèbres tels que Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ou Karl Friedrich Schinkel, que la collégiale fut progressivement restaurée et reconstruite. Le style d'origine fut conservé, de sorte qu'une basilique romane très similaire à l'originale vit le jour sur le Petersberg. Son plan est donc en forme de croix et elle comporte trois nefs. Celles-ci sont toutefois très larges, ce qui est plutôt inhabituel, mais s'explique probablement par son emplacement en haut du rocher. Aujourd'hui, l'église collégiale augustinienne est une étape de la Route romane et est ouverte aux visiteurs. Une particularité est que le monastère attenant n'est pas vide, mais est à nouveau utilisé aujourd'hui dans cette fonction : des moines et des nonnes de la communauté Christusbruderschaft Selbitz y vivent. Ils permettent aux visiteurs de participer aux prières et aux offices religieux. De plus, des visites guidées sont possibles sur réservation.
