Was die Stadtkirche St. Marien Greiz besonders macht:

What makes St. Mary’s Church in Greiz so special:
This complex is
Classicism at its best: The former court church of the Reuss princes of the elder line was built in 1736 by the Saxon master architect Christian Friedrich Schuricht and forms a visual unity with the Lower Castle and the high school.
Incidentally, the first church here was already mentioned in a document as early as 1225. After the great city fire of 1802, Schuricht’s Classicist church had to be rebuilt—including the
64-meter-high tower.
The interior of the three-nave church is divided by massive Corinthian columns; the three gallery levels offer space for about 1,000 visitors.
Highlights you can see here: The state coffin of Heinrich VI on the first gallery—Count Reuss-Obergreiz fell in the Battle of Zenta against the Turks in 1697 and is celebrated as a hero of Greiz. The coffin is located in a small memorial chapel. Also note the pulpit altar with its rich Neoclassical decoration at the eastern end of the church, as well as the Kreutzbach organ—it is one of the largest organs in the Thuringia region.
The
key to the church is available at the tourist information office.
