Der kleine Ort (210 m ü. NN, 54 Einwohner), ca. 1,5 km von Kolkwitz aus bachaufwärts in Richtung Langenschade gelegen, wird 1445 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt. Sein Ortsname kündet von einer neuen Ansiedlung, die, ebenso wie der Ort Weißbach, später als die Nachbardörfer bei fortschreitender Rodung des Heidewaldes im 12. oder 13. Jahrhundert entstanden sein dürfte.
Neben der Landwirtschaft spielte das Mühlengewerbe eine bedeutende Rolle. Ende des 19., Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts verschwanden mit der Industrialisierung die wassergetriebenen Mühlen. Lediglich einige Gebäude blieben stehen.
Durch Naundorf führt der Schusterstieg, die einst viel begangene kürzeste Wegverbindung zwischen Rudolstadt und Pößneck über die Heide.

Son nom de lieu annonce un nouvel établissement qui, tout comme le village de Weißbach, a probablement été créé plus tard que les villages voisins lors du défrichement progressif de la forêt de bruyère au 12ème ou 13ème siècle.
Outre l'agriculture, l'industrie meunière jouait un rôle important. A la fin du 19e et au début du 20e siècle, les moulins à eau ont disparu avec l'industrialisation. Seuls quelques bâtiments sont restés debout.
Naundorf est traversé par le Schusterstieg, le chemin le plus court entre Rudolstadt et Pößneck à travers la lande, autrefois très fréquenté.

The small village (210 m above sea level, 54 inhabitants), located about 1.5 km upstream from Kolkwitz in the direction of Langenschade, was first mentioned in a document in 1445. The name of the village refers to a new settlement, which, like the village of Weißbach, probably arose later than the neighboring villages during the progressive clearing of the Heidewald in the 12th or 13th century.
Besides agriculture, the milling industry played an important role. At the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century the water-driven mills disappeared with the industrialization. Only a few buildings remained standing.
The Schusterstieg, once the shortest route between Rudolstadt and Pößneck across the heath, passes through Naundorf.
