Vom Bonifatiusfelsen hat man einen wunderbaren Blick auf das Schloss und den Park. Vor mehr als 250 Millionen Jahren befand sich hier das Urmeer. Dieses beherbergte ein riesiges Korallenriff, aus dem sich im Laufe der Jahrmillionen das heutige „Zechsteinriff“ formte. Es war diese reizvolle, felsenreiche Landschaft des Altenstein, die Herzog Georg I. bewog, ihn als Sommerresidenz auszugestalten. Das steil abfallende Zechsteinriff war damals kaum bewaldet und erinnerte im romantischen Sinn an Alpenlandschaften. Einzelne Felsklippen ragten nahezu senkrecht heraus und regten dazu an, sie gartenkünstlerisch zu gestalten.

Celle-ci abritait un énorme récif corallien qui, au fil des millions d'années, a formé l'actuel "récif du Zechstein". C'est ce charmant paysage rocheux de l'Altenstein qui a incité le duc George Ier à l'aménager en résidence d'été. À l'époque, le récif de zéchstein aux pentes abruptes n'était guère boisé et rappelait les paysages alpins au sens romantique du terme. Certaines falaises rocheuses s'élevaient presque à la verticale et incitaient à les aménager en jardins artistiques.
From the Bonifatiusfelsen you have a wonderful view of the castle and the park. More than 250 million years ago, the primordial sea was located here. This was home to a huge coral reef, from which today's "Zechstein reef" was formed over millions of years. It was this charming, rocky landscape of the Altenstein that prompted Duke Georg I to make it his summer residence. The steeply sloping Zechstein reef was barely wooded at the time and was reminiscent of Alpine landscapes in a romantic sense. Individual rocky cliffs jutted out almost vertically and inspired the design of the gardens.
