Die Gemeinde Westenfeld wird nachweisbar erstmalig 871 urkundlich als „Westelernvelt“ erwähnt, später im Jahre 1185 als „Westinvelt“ mit einer selbstständigen Kirche. Westenfeld war ursprünglich Eigentum der Grafen von Henneberg. Es ist ein sogenanntes "Haufendorf", dessen Flur typisch für die südlichen Ausläufer des Thüringer Waldes ist. Als bevorzugter Baustil ist noch das fränkische Fachwerk erhalten. Bei einigen Höfen ist sogar noch der typische fränkische Hausflur mit darunterliegenden Stallungen erhalten geblieben.

La commune de Westenfeld est mentionnée pour la première fois dans un document en 871 sous le nom de "Westelernvelt", puis en 1185 sous le nom de "Westinvelt" avec une église indépendante. Westenfeld était à l'origine la propriété des comtes de Henneberg. C'est ce que l'on appelle un "village en tas", dont les terres sont typiques des contreforts sud de la forêt de Thuringe. Le style de construction privilégié est encore celui des colombages franconiens. Certaines fermes ont même conservé un couloir typiquement franconien avec des écuries en dessous.

The municipality of Westenfeld is documented for the first time in 871 as "Westelernvelt", later in 1185 as "Westinvelt" with an independent church. Westenfeld was originally the property of the Counts of Henneberg. It is a so-called "Haufendorf", whose fields are typical for the southern foothills of the Thuringian Forest. As a preferred building style the Franconian half-timbering is still preserved. On some farms, even the typical Franconian hallway with stables underneath has been preserved.
