According to legend, Saint Kilian rested on his way from Würzburg to the Kreuzberg at the spot where the Holy Cross Chapel in Sulzthal now stands. A spring sprang up there, at the edge of which a cross grew from a rosebush. Since then, according to tradition, the water has possessed miraculous powers, and numerous prayers have been answered. The "Holy Cross Chapel of the Rosebush" was born out of veneration, and was first documented on May 16, 1451. Cardinal Nicholas, papal legate for Germany, granted a hundred-day indulgence at that time; further indulgences followed until the 19th century, and the chapel developed into a popular place of pilgrimage. With the Thirty Years' War, it lost its importance, partly because the spring dried up. Nevertheless, the small church was enlarged in 1711 and its interior was repeatedly refurbished. After secularization in the early 19th century, demolition was threatened, but the citizens of Sulzthal auctioned off the chapel, thus securing its continued existence. After the ceremonial reopening on November 14, 1810, numerous renovations followed. Since the 1960s, a series of break-ins led to the removal of valuable items from the parish church. A comprehensive renovation took place from 1987 to 1991. Today, the Holy Cross Chapel is open on Sundays and public holidays between Easter and All Saints' Day and enjoys great popularity as a romantic venue for church weddings.
