Ganglof (=Gangloff) is the patron saint of the local church; Sumeringen = damp, wet area (=sömmern), Schilfa = Schilfe (place in damp, with reeds overgrown area). Finds from oldest time prove that in the two local parts Gangloffsömmern and Schilfa since millennia humans settled, who fed themselves mainly from the fruitful fields. Characteristic for Gangloffsömmern is the church built on a hill west of the village with its dominating Romanesque double towers, while for Schilfa the bushes enclosing the village are typical. Closely connected with the villages were the noble families of theirs, von Brühl and von Hagke, who had lived there for centuries. After all, the famous prime minister of August the Strong in Saxony, Heinrich von Brühl, as well as military officers and district councillors came from these families. A high value in ornithological circles has also the "bird professor" Johannes Thienemann, born in Gangloffsömmern, whose researches to the bird migration were groundbreaking.
