Im Jahr 1282 wurde die alte Thomaskirche erstmals schriftlich in einer Urkunde erwähnt und vermutlich in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts im Stil der Gotik neu erbaut. Sie befindet sich in einer Parkanlage an der Schillerstraße. 1689 spielten für kurze Zeit Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Sebastians ältester Bruder, sowie zwischen 1702 und 1707 Johann Gottfried Walther, ein Cousin von Johann Sebastian Bach, als Organisten in der alten Thomaskirche. Am Karsamstag, dem 31. März 1945, wurde diese Kirche durch Bomben bis auf die Außenmauern und den Turm zerstört. Sofort nach Beendigung des Krieges begann die Gemeinde mit dem Neuaufbau. So konnte 1950 die wiederhergestellte Thomaskirche feierlich eingeweiht werden. Sie ist Erfurts einzige neugotische Stadtkirche. Durch den Flügelaltar aus dem 15. Jh. als kostbarstes Ausstattungsstück und die hervorragende Akustik zählt sie zu den kulturhistorisch besonders interessanten Baudenkmälern der Stadt.

L'ancienne église Saint-Thomas est mentionnée pour la première fois par écrit dans un document de 1282 et a probablement été reconstruite en style gothique dans la première moitié du 14e siècle. Il est situé dans un parc de la Schillerstraße. En 1689, Johann Christoph Bach, le frère aîné de Johann Sebastian, et entre 1702 et 1707 Johann Gottfried Walther, un cousin de Johann Sebastian Bach, ont joué brièvement comme organistes dans l'ancienne église Saint-Thomas. The old St. Thomas Church was first mentioned in writing in a document in 1282 and was probably rebuilt in the Gothic style in the first half of the 14th century. It is located in a park on Schillerstraße. In 1689 Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Sebastian's eldest brother, and between 1702 and 1707 Johann Gottfried Walther, a cousin of Johann Sebastian Bach, played as organists in the old St. Thomas Church for a short time. On Holy Saturday, 31 March 1945, this church was destroyed by bombs except for the outer walls and the tower. Immediately after the end of the war, the congregation began to rebuild. Thus, in 1950, the restored St. Thomas Church could be solemnly consecrated. It is Erfurt's only neo-Gothic city church. Due to the winged altar from the 15th century as the most precious piece of equipment and the excellent acoustics, it is one of the most culturally and historically interesting monuments of the city.
