Die Eremitage an der Kreuzkapelle in Sulzthal entstand im 18. Jahrhundert, als der große Zulauf zur Kapelle einen eigenen Hüter notwendig machte. Der Einsiedler wohnte in der kleinen Klause, betreute das Kirchlein, läutete dreimal täglich die Glocke und betete mit den Wallfahrern. Über dem Eingang der Eremitage ist die Jahreszahl 1740 zu lesen; um diese Zeit wirkte dort Johann Döring aus Großwenkheim. Ihm folgten weitere Klausner wie Johann Blasius aus Trappstadt und Johann Kaspar Fischer, der 1775 während eines Termins in Greßthal verstarb. Nach der Säkularisation 1803 drohten Klause und Kapelle dem Abbruch. Ein kurbayerischer Visitationsbeamter beschrieb 1805 die Hütte samt Garten als baufällig und forderte deren Auflösung. Doch der Widerstand der Sulzthaler verhinderte den Abriss: 1810 ging das Ensemble in Gemeindebesitz über. Zwei Jahre später zog mit Johann Weidinger, einem ehemaligen Franziskanerbruder, nochmals ein Einsiedler ein. Nach dessen Tod blieb die Klause jedoch unbewohnt. Ab etwa 1912 nutzte die Gemeinde das Häuschen als Jagdhaus oder Notwohnung. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs lebte der Jagdpächter aufgrund der Luftangriffe dauerhaft dort und erweiterte das Gebäude. Schließlich wurde die inzwischen baufällige Eremitage 1984 grundlegend saniert. Heute ist sie von einem kleinen Garten mit Sitzgruppe und Hecke umgeben und stellt ein einzigartiges Zeugnis gelebter Volksfrömmigkeit in Sulzthal dar.
L'ermitage de la chapelle de la Croix à Sulzthal fut construit au XVIIIe siècle, lorsque le grand nombre de visiteurs rendit nécessaire la nomination d'un gardien dédié. Finalement, l'ermitage, aujourd'hui délabré, fut entièrement rénové en 1984. Aujourd'hui entouré d'un petit jardin avec un coin salon et une haie, il constitue un témoignage unique de la piété populaire à Sulzthal.
The hermitage at the Chapel of the Cross in Sulzthal was built in the 18th century, when the large number of visitors to the chapel made it necessary to have a dedicated custodian. The hermit lived in the small hermitage, looked after the small church, rang the bell three times a day, and prayed with the pilgrims. The year 1740 can be read above the entrance to the hermitage; around this time, Johann Döring from Großwenkheim worked there. He was followed by other hermits such as Johann Blasius from Trappstadt and Johann Kaspar Fischer, who died in Greßthal in 1775 during a meeting. After the secularization of 1803, the hermitage and chapel were threatened with demolition. In 1805, a Bavarian visitation official described the hut and garden as dilapidated and demanded its demolition. However, the resistance of the Sulzthal residents prevented the demolition: in 1810, the complex became municipal property. Two years later, another hermit, Johann Weidinger, a former Franciscan friar, moved in. After his death, however, the hermitage remained unoccupied. From around 1912, the community used the cottage as a hunting lodge or emergency accommodation. During World War II, the hunting tenant lived there permanently due to air raids and expanded the building. Finally, the now dilapidated hermitage was completely renovated in 1984. Today, it is surrounded by a small garden with a seating area and a hedge and represents a unique testament to popular piety in Sulzthal.
