The bell tower on the southern part of the Ettersberg in the immediate vicinity of the former concentration camp is part of the Buchenwald National Memorial. The GDR government issued the decision to erect the memorial in 1954. The architecture shows visitors the way from death to life: beyond the crematorium to the three mass graves and finally to the bell tower. The monumental symbol of freedom and light is framed by Fritz Cremer's group of figures in honour of the resistance fighters in the camp.
Der Glockenturm auf dem südlichen Teil des Ettersbergs in unmittelbarer Nähe zum ehemaligen Konzentrationslager ist Teil der nationalen Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Buchenwald. Die DDR-Regierung erließ im Jahr 1954 den Beschluss zur Errichtung des Mahnmals. Die Architektur weist den Besucherinnen und Besuchern den Weg vom Tod ins Leben: über das Krematorium hinaus zu den drei Massengräbern und schließlich zum Glockenturm. Das monumentale Symbol der Freiheit und des Lichts wird umrahmt von Fritz Cremers Figurengruppe zu Ehren der Widerstandskämpfer im Lager.
Le clocher, situé sur la partie sud de l'Ettersberg, à proximité immédiate de l'ancien camp de concentration, fait partie du Mémorial national de Buchenwald. Le gouvernement de la RDA prit la décision d'ériger ce mémorial en 1954. L'architecture indique aux visiteurs le chemin de la mort à la vie : au-delà du crématoire, vers les trois fosses communes, et enfin vers le clocher. À côté de ce symbole monumental de la liberté et de la lumière se trouve la statue d´un groupe de résistants des camps conçue par Fritz Cremer.
