Die Stadtkirche Sankt Nikolai zählt zu den optisch prägendsten Gebäuden der Stadt Schmölln. Erbaut im 15. Jahrhundert, ist sie ein Ort der Begegnung, atmet Geschichte, verbindet Menschen und lädt zur Einkehr auf dem Weg durchs Leben ein. Für die Kirchgemeinde ebenso wie für die Bürgergemeinde ist sie unverzichtbar. In der Nacht vom 19. auf den 20. Oktober 1772 entstand ein großer Stadtbrand, dem auch die Kirche zum Opfer fiel. Sie brannte bis auf die Umfassungsmauern nieder. Selbst die vier großen Glocken des Kirchturms schmolzen. Ab 1773 begann der Wiederaufbau. Die Kirche entstand in ihrer heutigen Form als dreischiffige, spätgotische Hallenkirche mit verändertem Turm. Danach verfügte sie nur noch über drei Glocken, von denen die große Glocke 1917 im Ersten Weltkrieg abgegeben wurde. Erst 1933 wurde eine neue dritte Glocke angeschafft, die in Apolda gegossen wurde. An der südlichen Außenwand der Kirche befinden sich schöne Baldachine, Konsolen und Pfeilerfialen. Die Orgel wurde 1917 von der Dresdner Firma Jehmlich erbaut. Das gut erhaltene Kirchenarchiv enthält Kostbarkeiten der Musikliteratur sowie mittelalterliches Schrift- und Messgut. Seit 2016 wird die Kirchenfassade grundlegend renoviert. Die Sanierung begann kurz vor dem Weihnachtsfest 2016 mit der ersten Fläche, der sogenannten Musterachse, an der Außenfassade. 2018 folgte die Südfassade, 2019 schließlich die Nordfassade. Zur Finanzierung gründete sich der Kirchbauverein „St. Nicolai“ Schmölln e. V.
L'église Saint-Nicolas compte parmi les édifices les plus emblématiques de la ville de Schmölln. Construite au XVe siècle, c'est un lieu de rencontre qui respire l'histoire, rassemble les gens et invite à la réflexion tout au long du chemin de la vie. Elle est indispensable tant pour la paroisse que pour la communauté locale. Dans la nuit du 19 au 20 octobre 1772, un grand incendie ravagea la ville, emportant également l’église. Elle fut réduite en cendres jusqu’aux murs d’enceinte. Même les quatre grandes cloches du clocher fondirent. La reconstruction débuta en 1773. L’église prit sa forme actuelle : une église-halle de style gothique tardif à trois nefs, avec un clocher modifié. Par la suite, elle ne disposait plus que de trois cloches, dont la plus grande fut cédée en 1917 pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ce n’est qu’en 1933 qu’une troisième cloche fut acquise, coulée à Apolda. Le mur extérieur sud de l’église est orné de beaux baldaquins, de consoles et de fleurets. L'orgue a été construit en 1917 par la société Jehmlich de Dresde. Les archives de l'église, bien conservées, contiennent des trésors de la littérature musicale ainsi que des documents médiévaux et des objets liturgiques. Depuis 2016, la façade de l'église fait l'objet d'une rénovation en profondeur. Les travaux ont commencé peu avant Noël 2016 avec la première partie, dite « axe modèle », de la façade extérieure. La façade sud a suivi en 2018, puis enfin la façade nord en 2019. L'association « St. Nicolai » Schmölln e. V. a été fondée pour financer ces travaux.
St. Nicholas Church is one of the most visually striking buildings in the town of Schmölln. Built in the 15th century, it is a place of gathering that exudes history, brings people together, and invites visitors to pause and reflect on their journey through life. It is indispensable to both the church congregation and the local community. On the night of October 19–20, 1772, a major fire broke out in the town, and the church was among the buildings destroyed. It burned to the ground, leaving only the outer walls standing. Even the four large bells in the church tower melted. Reconstruction began in 1773. The church was rebuilt in its present form as a three-nave, late-Gothic hall church with a modified tower. Afterward, it had only three bells, of which the large bell was surrendered in 1917 during World War I. It was not until 1933 that a new third bell was acquired, which was cast in Apolda. The southern exterior wall of the church features beautiful canopies, corbels, and pilaster finials. The organ was built in 1917 by the Dresden-based firm Jehmlich. The well-preserved church archive contains treasures of musical literature as well as medieval manuscripts and liturgical items. Since 2016, the church façade has been undergoing extensive renovation. The restoration began shortly before Christmas 2016 with the first section, the so-called “sample axis,” on the exterior façade. The south façade followed in 2018, and finally the north façade in 2019. To finance the project, the church building association “St. Nicolai” Schmölln e. V. was founded.
