La ville de Schmölln, qui compte environ 11 000 habitants, se trouve à l'ouest du district. Im Westen des Landkreises liegt die rund 13.500 Einwohner zählende Stadt Schmölln. Bereits 1066 erfolgte als "Zmulna" die erste urkundliche Erwähnung durch Kaiser Heinrich IV., während in der Zeit zwischen 1334 und 1338 die Verleihung der Stadtrechte erfolgte. Kulturhistorisch beachtenswerte Bauwerke sind das gotische Rathaus und die Stadtkirche St. Nikolai. Die günstigen Eisenbahnverbindungen in weite Teile Thüringens und nach Sachsen sowie die unmittelbare Nähe zur Autobahn A 4 hat die Stadt in den letzten Jahren für viele Investoren interessant gemacht. Die in den vergangenen Jahren erschlossenen und fast vollständig bebauten drei Industrie- und Gewerbegebiete sind verkehrstechnisch ausgezeichnet erreichbar und begründen die berechtigte Hoffnung auf eine weitere positive wirtschaftliche Entwicklung. Traditionelle Branchen wie Nahrungs- und Genussmittelindustrie, Metallverarbeitung und Kunststofftechnik sind heute in den Industriegebieten angesiedelt. Außerdem produzieren hier auch verschiedene Unternehmen für die Automobilzulieferindustrie. Zahlreiche rekonstruierte Häuser, neu entstandene Wohngebiete, Hotels, das Sparkassenkompetenzcentrum, die Erweiterung der Handelseinrichtungen in allen Stadtteilen, das Bürger- und Vereinshaus, aber vor allem die "Ostthüringenhalle" als Mehrzweckhalle für Sport- und Kulturveranstaltungen veränderten in den vergangenen Jahren das Stadtbild wesentlich. In unmittelbarer Nähe zum Stadtpark - unterhalb des Pfefferbergs mit seinem Aussichtsturm - bietet das in einem alten Fachwerkbau eingerichtete Knopf- und Regionalmuseum umfangreiche Informationen über die für die Stadt so bedeutende Knopfindustrie, die einst Schmölln zur "Knopfstadt" werden ließ. Das alljährlich stattfindende Marktfest gehört traditionell zu dieser Stadt genauso wie der berühmte Schmöllner Mutzbraten.
