About: Ballroom in the Altenburg Residential Palace, Festsaal im Residenzschloss Altenburg, Salle des fêtes du château d'Altenburg

Der große Festsaal des Altenburger Schlosses wurde bereits im Barock konzipiert und in den Jahren 1730 bis 1734 ausgeführt. Ein Großbrand vernichtete 1864 das gesamte Interieur. Unter Beibehaltung der historischen Raumdisposition schlossen Wiederaufbau und Neugestaltung 1868 ab. Kräftig wirkende Säulenpaare und Pfeiler aus rotem westfälischen Marmor tragen die umlaufende Galerie. Rundbogenfelder an den oberen Wandabschlüssen längs der zwei oberen Fensterreihen sowie das große Deckengemälde thematisieren das einzige aus der Antike überlieferte Märchen, die spannungsreiche Geschichte von Amor und Psyche. Künstler ist der Schwind-Schüler Karl Moßdorf. Wechselnder Lichteinfall im Tagesverlauf und die Ausgewogenheit der Proportionen unterstützen die Anmutung einer besonderen Raumatmosphäre. Die Raumentwürfe schuf der Altenburger Oberbauinspektor Julius Richard Enger, der auch die Leitung vor Ort innehatte. Bezüglich Detailgestaltung und Materialien stand Friedrich August Stüler (Berlin) beratend zur Seite. Der Festsaal gilt als gelungenes Gesamtkunstwerk des Historismus, wobei sich die räumliche Größe als einmalig herausstellt.

La grande salle de fête du château d'Altenburg a été conçue dès l'époque baroque et réalisée entre 1730 et 1734. Un grand incendie a détruit l'ensemble de l'intérieur en 1864. La reconstruction et le réaménagement ont été achevés en 1868, tout en conservant la disposition historique de la pièce. Des paires de colonnes et de piliers en marbre rouge de Westphalie à l'allure robuste soutiennent la galerie périphérique. Des champs d'arcs en plein cintre aux extrémités supérieures des murs le long des deux rangées de fenêtres supérieures ainsi que la grande peinture du plafond ont pour thème le seul conte de fées transmis depuis l'Antiquité, l'histoire pleine de tension de Cupidon et Psyché. L'artiste est Karl Moßdorf, élève de Schwind. L'incidence changeante de la lumière au cours de la journée et l'équilibre des proportions renforcent l'impression d'une atmosphère particulière dans la pièce. Les plans de l'espace ont été réalisés par Julius Richard Enger, inspecteur en chef des travaux publics d'Altenburg, qui était également chargé de la direction sur place. Friedrich August Stüler (Berlin) l'a conseillé sur les détails et les matériaux. La salle des fêtes est considérée comme une œuvre d'art totale réussie de l'historicisme, la taille de l'espace étant unique en son genre.

The large banqueting hall of Altenburg Palace was designed in the Baroque period and built between 1730 and 1734. A major fire destroyed the entire interior in 1864. Reconstruction and redesign were completed in 1868, retaining the historical room layout. Powerful pairs of columns and pillars made of red Westphalian marble support the surrounding gallery. Arched panels at the top of the walls along the two upper rows of windows and the large ceiling painting depict the only fairy tale to have survived from antiquity, the exciting story of Cupid and Psyche. The room designs were created by the Altenburg senior building inspector Julius Richard Enger, who was also the site manager. The banqueting hall is considered a successful synthesis of the arts of historicism, and its spatial dimensions are unique.
