Das Museum Mödlareuth versteht sich als Museumsprojekt zur Geschichte der deutschen Teilung. Nach der Museumsgründung 1990 zeigte sich sehr bald die Notwendigkeit, das Gesamtprojekt »Museum Mödlareuth« aus finanziellen und zeitlichen Erwägungen heraus in überschau- und realisierbare Projekteinheiten aufzugliedern, die aufeinander abgestimmt letztendlich Bausteine auf dem Weg zum Gesamtprojekt darstellen.
Dementsprechend wurde zeitgleich mit der Errichtung eines Freigeländes von 1991 bis 1994 mit dem Aufbau einer »musealen Infrastruktur« in Form von Verwaltung, Archiv, Bibliothek und Depots begonnen.
Die Erweiterung der bestehenden Depotbereiche erfolgte in den Jahren 1997/98 durch den Neubau eines Kfz-Depots.
In den Jahren 1999 bis 2003 wurden durch Umbau- und Sanierungsmaßnahmen zwei Film-/Vortragsräume, ein Sonderausstellungsraum sowie eine Infothek und ein Museumsshop geschaffen.
