Die historische Waidmühle in Sohnstedt erinnert an die Zeit, in der der Anbau und die Verarbeitung von Waid – einer wichtigen Färberpflanze für die Herstellung des blauen Farbstoffs – ein bedeutender Wirtschaftszweig in Thüringen war. In der Mühle wurden die geernteten Waidblätter zu sogenannten Waidballen zermahlen und weiterverarbeitet. Der erhaltene Stein zeugt bis heute von dieser regionalen Handwerkstradition und macht die Geschichte des Waidanbaus in Thüringen sichtbar. Durch verschiedene örtliche Sponsoren entstand um dieses historische Denkmal herum der schöne Rastplatz.

Dans ce moulin, les feuilles de pastel récoltées étaient broyées pour former ce qu'on appelle des « balles de pastel », puis transformées. La pierre préservée témoigne encore aujourd’hui de cette tradition artisanale régionale et rend visible l’histoire de la culture du pastel en Thuringe. Grâce à divers sponsors locaux, une belle aire de repos a été aménagée autour de ce monument historique.
The historic woad mill in Sohnstedt serves as a reminder of the time when the cultivation and processing of woad—an important dye plant used to produce blue dye—was a major industry in Thuringia. At the mill, the harvested woad leaves were ground into so-called woad bales and further processed. The preserved stone still bears witness to this regional craft tradition today and brings the history of woad cultivation in Thuringia to life. Thanks to various local sponsors, a beautiful rest area was created around this historic monument.
