Oberroßla is part of Oberroßla/Rödigsdorf, a district of the town of Apolda in the Weimarer Land district. Oberroßla is located on the western edge of the town center of Apolda and on the B87 federal highway as well as on the south-eastern edge of the Thuringian Basin. The district is located on the best arable land with a high yield level. The Ilm flows along the northern edge of the parcel. Greened erosion gullies break up the landscape. The village lies on the Ilm valley cycle path. It is located 3 km west of Apolda town center on a north-facing slope of a mountain on the right bank of the Ilm, along which the Ilm Valley Cycle Path also runs. Oberroßla was first mentioned in a document on 29.10.1297. However, a large number of medieval finds dating back to the Stone Age have proven that there were dwellings in the region much earlier. It is assumed that the later settlement of Oberroßla originated to the east of the current village in the early Middle Ages. The name consists of the word "-ross-" (horse), the word relating to the geographical location "ober-" (elevated location) and the ending "-la" (from Indo-European). The inhabitants of the settlement therefore mainly kept horses. Oberroßla can be easily reached via the B87 from Weimar or Eckartsberga. This road was started from Weimar by Duke Carl August von Weimar on Goethe's recommendation and completed by Napoleon in 1807-1812. Goethe owned an estate in Oberroßla from 1798 to 1803, which was later destroyed by fire. The land belonging to it was divided up. In 1858, the inn "Zum Schlosshof" was built on the foundations of the manor house. The cellar vaults (vegetable cellar and milk vault) are still preserved today. In addition, the "Goethe Spring" and an old Margaret pear tree (known as the "Goethe Pear Tree") in the former Hüttenrauch nursery (formerly the estate garden) commemorate the great poet. One of the oldest buildings in the village is the church, built in the 15th century, where Dr. Martin Luther is said to have preached in 1539. Beautiful archways at courtyard entrances can still be admired today as stone witnesses to their origins (late Gothic - around 1450, Baroque - 17th century). A memorial in honor of those killed in the Battle of Sedan commemorates the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. A war memorial is dedicated to the victims of the First World War from 1914 to 1918.
