In 1715, the church, which had fallen into disrepair, was demolished, but the tower continued to be used by the Barfüßergemeinde as a bell tower until 1942. a musical attraction: a carillon of 60 bronze bells designed by Peter and Margarete Schilling. It plays different melodies at 10 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m.
What else you can see at the tower: As you climb to the top of the 49-meter-high tower, you’ll walk through an exhibition on the history and use of the building; guided tours are available upon request. Be sure to also check out the Bartholomäus Tower from the outside: Since 1992, it has once again been crowned with its reconstructed Gothic spire.
And a true
masterpiece from the former St. Bartholomew’s Church can be admired today in the choir of the Barfüßerkirche: a magnificent, late-Gothic altarpiece.
