The former monastery church of St. Laurentius in Aura an der Saale dates back to the founding of a monastery by Bishop Otto of Bamberg in 1108. Built as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with a transept in the west, three semicircular apses in the east and two towers, it was part of an imposing monastery complex that formed a closed quadrangle. A characteristic feature is the so-called "Saxon alternation of columns" - an unusual architectural feature for Franconia. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1564, the church was greatly reduced in size in 1690: the transept and apses disappeared and the towers were used as a quarry for a new tower and rectory. In 1720, the interior was given its still characteristic baroque design with the high altar flanked by figures of St. Laurentius, St. Kilian, St. Aquilinus and St. Burkhard. In 1975, a comprehensive restoration began under Pastor Josef Baumgart, which brought the original character of the building back to life. Today, the church impresses with its harmonious blend of Romanesque austerity and Baroque splendor. Those who climb the steep church path are rewarded with a unique view of the Saale valley and a church interior that exudes tranquillity and the Benedictine spirit of past centuries.
