Travelers on the road from Schleiz to Gera will notice the 53-meter-high Gothic tower of the church in Rödersdorf. The building points to a significant history. Rödersdorf was once a pilgrimage site, known for a Pietà believed to be miraculous. At that time, indulgence markets were also held at Pentecost and in autumn. Today, the "Abbelsmarkt" is still celebrated as a church fair, without the practice of selling indulgences. As early as 1193, the construction of a church in Rödersdorf is mentioned. In 1340 and 1341, Pope Benedict XII and Bishop Witicho I of Naumburg granted indulgences to support the church. In 1480, the church was rebuilt in Gothic style by the Teutonic Order. In 1598, lightning destroyed the church, but it was rebuilt the same year. Inside the church, art treasures can be found, such as a late Gothic stained glass window depicting a crucifixion group and St. Jodocus. A magnificent gemmed cross in the triumphal arch contains an older cross with a Gothic corpus, created by Katrin Gensch and painted by Gerhard Seidel. The carved altar in the central shrine, restored in 1998, was made by Hans Gottwald of Lohr. It depicts a Pietà flanked by Saints Bartholomew and an unknown bishop. Other altar panels show saints such as Ursula, Lucia, Anna, and Catherine. An older carved altar from the workshop of Lendenstreich is located on the south side. It features Mary with the Child, Jodocus or Vitus, and Sebastian. A Pietà on the north side might represent the once-venerated pilgrimage image. A Renaissance baptismal font from 1608 shows reliefs of the baptism of Jesus and the blessing of the children. A sacrament niche contains a figure of the Christ Child. In the side chapel, there is a piscina and unclear figures, including Proculus, Wolfgang, and Pantaleon. Five reliquaries are also present. In 1998, restoration work was carried out on the masonry, window frames, and the tower. An interior renovation followed in 1999. The organ, built in 1895 by Ernst Poppe, is now in need of restoration and stands on the organ loft, accompanied by a two-door Renaissance-style cupboard. Three bells hang in the tower.
