Eichsfeld was an exceptional political region in the GDR that presented the SED dictatorship with particular challenges, even driving it to the brink of despair. In order to push back the sphere of influence of the Catholic Church and expand the social, economic and cultural infrastructure in the industrially poor region, the party decided on the so-called "Eichsfeld Plan" in 1959.
