The Osthöfer Tor was the first structure of the city wall built between 1448 and 1483 and stood in the east of the city. It was initially built as a gatehouse. The main purpose of the gatehouse was to create a link between the moated castle and the town. It also gave the inhabitants of the village of Osthöfen quick access to Tennstedt. The village of Osthöfen was located to the east of Tennstedt and was granted its own town charter in 1419. In 1436, the town of Osthöfen was united with Tennstedt on the instructions of the Saxon sovereign and from then on formed the suburb of Osthöfen. The octagonal brick tower was added in 1579. The Osthöfer Tor is a gate tower and still looks the same today as it does in Merian's copperplate engraving. The first floor is made of travertine and has a ground plan of 6.80 x 7.20 m with a gate-like passageway in an east-west direction. Carts and visitors entered the town through the gateway directly onto the market square at the town hall. Above the four side edges of the first floor are small slate-covered roofs that lean against the superstructure. The first and second floors rise slightly indented above the first floor. On the roof structure is the so-called "luminaire", which supports the top of the roof. Its octagonal shape from the second floor upwards is characteristic of the entire tower building. The tower clock with 3 clock faces was installed in 1918. These are located on the 2nd floor facing east, west and north. Access to the tower is possible via a spiral staircase on the south side of the gate. In 1905, the gate tower was intercepted on the instructions of the magistrate and with a grant from the Provincial Monuments Commission under the direction of master builder Ludwig. A damaged pillar was demolished, re-founded and re-bricked. The tower structure was supported by ring beams and the slate-covered helmet roof was repaired. The connection to the town wall to the north was demolished, while the wall connection to the south was retained. It is 15 m long, 1.00 m high and approx. 50-60 cm wide and connects the gate to the existing town wall with half-shell tower. The built-in ring anchors still hold the tower today. The Osthöfer Tor is the landmark of the town of Bad Tennstedt.
